Heat battle at the airport: workers fight against 45 degree asphalt!
Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport (FKB) is currently anything but a relaxed place to work. With temperatures over 30 degrees, the heat on the asphalt feels like an oppressive 45 degrees. This is not only a challenge for passengers, but especially for the employees who have to struggle under these conditions. Tobias Leppert, a 36-year-old employee who works in handling, describes the situation: “We are under pressure because we have to turn the machines around within just 30 minutes.”
For Leppert and his colleagues, this means unloading and reloading luggage quickly in order to process the flights on time. They are also responsible for passenger processing, fueling and baggage handling. A pretty tight program with such extreme temperatures, which often exceed 30 degrees, especially in high season.
The challenges of the heat
The heat-related challenges should not be underestimated. “We have to make sure that we drink enough – 3 to 4 liters per shift are essential,” emphasizes Leppert. Applying sunscreen is also becoming routine to avoid skin damage caused by strong sunlight. These are not the only requirements: Leppert often also helps with boarding passengers and has a heart for families by carrying strollers.
The team appreciates a small gesture of gratitude from the travelers. “It’s nice to see that the passengers recognize what we do and sometimes even give small thanks,” says Leppert. This appreciation gives an additional boost and invigorates the mood during the hectic hours at the airport.
Cohesion and team spirit
However, the heat wave not only shows the commitment of individual employees, but also the great solidarity within the team. Together they overcome the challenges and ensure that everything runs smoothly. Despite the oppressive heat and time pressure, the team spirit remains strong and motivates employees to give their best.
Ultimately, the situation at Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport impressively shows how important the commitment of employees is - something that often happens in the background, but is essential for the smooth running of flight operations. Given the extreme weather conditions, their achievements are more than remarkable and deserve full praise.
