Heilbronn: City library named Library of the Year 2025!
The Heilbronn City Library has developed into a real center of encounters and exchange in recent years. Since its reopening in June 2024 after two years of renovation, it has not only shined in a new light, but also surprised with an innovative concept that has now been honored with the title “Library of the Year 2025” in Baden-Württemberg. This was announced on Tuesday by the Baden-Württemberg library association. The award comes with prize money of 10,000 euros, which will be used for the further development of the library. This comes from a report by SWR out.
Doris Wolpert, the library director, emphasizes that the library is more than just a place to read. It has developed into a popular meeting place for the population, with around a thousand visitors coming together every day. With various reading corners and specially designed areas, it also remains a place of peace. The “reading nests” in the form of small houses in the children’s corner are particularly in demand among young readers. But the library offers much more: a modern music room with electric pianos invites you to experiment and make music.
Innovative projects and child support
The prize money of 10,000 euros will be used, among other things, to further expand the offering for children and young people. Plans include, among other things, an activity area with games that encourage movement and concentration, as well as a creative project to design a wall in the children's corner. These approaches were highlighted as particularly innovative by the jury that awarded the award. In addition, a film project will be initiated that will create more creative opportunities for users, such as the voice reported.
The Heilbronn City Library's award is remarkable because it not only highlights the technical innovations, but also praises the close networking with other cultural and educational institutions. This connection to different actors makes it possible to create diverse and contemporary offerings. The high environmental standards of the newly designed K3 premises are also rated positively.
A look at the current media landscape shows that libraries are more in demand than ever. The Frankfurt Book Fair recently recorded 348,000 visitors - a sign of the growing interest in books and literature. The social media platform TikTok in particular contributes to millions of books being recommended and sold under the hashtag “Booktok”. In 2022, over 25 million books recommended by “Booktok” were sold in Germany. These trends reflect changing media usage habits, to which the Heilbronn City Library is responding with its wide range of offerings.
With the award and the upcoming projects, the Heilbronn City Library not only sets standards in Baden-Württemberg, but also shows what modern library work can and should look like. A place is created here where reading, learning and community can be experienced in equal measure.
