Esslingen is planning a new marketplace: construction starts for official celebrations in 2027!

Something is happening in Esslingen: The city has big plans, because the new market square should be completed by the city's anniversary in 2027. This redesign will not only enrich the city center, but also become a central meeting point for citizens and visitors. This is reported by the Esslinger newspaper.

Mayor Hans-Georg Sigel is confident that the construction work that has already begun will be completed this year before the new structures for the popular medieval and Christmas market shine. However, surprises cannot be ruled out, as unexpected finds could disrupt the plans during the renovation of an underground medieval tunnel that is a listed building.

The vision of the new marketplace

The new plans envisage a zone with few cars, intended primarily for pedestrians and outdoor dining. The market square should not only be a place for events, but also offer more space for comfortable gatherings. Additional trees and leafy tree beds that provide shade, as well as a fountain field and drinking water fountains ensure that the space remains inviting and pleasant, especially in warm temperatures, as is the case City of Esslingen describes.

The new pavement will be colored lighter to reflect sunlight and allow rainwater to seep away - an important aspect of adapting to climate-induced changes. The city is pursuing a concept that also addresses the challenges of climate change.

Construction time and financial conditions

The redesign of the marketplace will cost around 6 million euros. Together with the planning costs, the entire project amounts to around 7.5 million euros. This also includes the redesign of Abt-Fulrad-Straße, which is due to take place after the city's anniversary in 2027, which increases the total investment to 11.2 million euros.

Preparations for the tendering of the construction work are already underway, and the first changes are expected to become visible in 2025. However, during construction work, visitors will have to prepare for alternative locations for the weekly market, which will take place on Bahnhofstrasse during this time.

Environment and future events

There is particularly great anticipation that the swearing festival will take place on the old market square for the last time in 2026 before the new square opens in 2027. The Christmas and medieval markets will also take place at other locations in the coming years so as not to stand in the way of the construction work.

The future accessibility of the market square will also be a priority: a guidance system for the blind and more bicycle parking spaces are planned. But it's not just the redesign that will make the city more lively. Renovation work on the Geiselbach Canal, which is scheduled for spring 2025, will add to the attractiveness of the city center.

The citizens can be excited - Esslingen has taken on an ambitious project that will not only give the city a new shine on its 1250th birthday, but will also make a contribution to climate protection. This is underpinned by targeted climate change adaptation measures such as this Federal Environment Agency confirmed.
