Discover Esslingen's history: Exciting tours on November 16th!

An exciting weekend is just around the corner in Esslingen am Neckar. On Sunday, November 16, 2025, the Esslingen Municipal Museums invite you to two informative tours dedicated to the history of the city and its residents. Anyone interested in Esslingen's rich past has the opportunity to immerse themselves in these fascinating stories.

The first tour begins at 1:30 p.m. in the city museum in the Yellow House at Hafenmarkt 7. Here, visitors can visit the permanent exhibition, which covers a comprehensive period from 777 AD to the middle of the 20th century. Registration is not required, but the number of participants is limited. Admission costs 4 euros, reduced price 2 euros, and access is even free for children and young people up to 18 years of age. The city's history is clearly presented here and there is a lot to discover.

A look into the past

For anyone interested in Esslingen's medieval beginnings, a guided tour of the St. Dionys excavation museum, which is located under the town church on the market square, is offered at 3:00 p.m. Discover the remains of the town church's predecessor buildings, which were uncovered during construction work for underfloor heating in 1960. These archaeological excavations, which lasted until 1963, were the beginning of medieval archeology in the former Baden-Württemberg State Monuments Office.

Finds such as the remains of the crypt, the saint's grave and the Nordmannstein, which contains one of the oldest grave inscriptions in southwest Germany, are particularly noteworthy. In the excavation museum you can see the building sequences that have grown over the centuries and reflect the ecclesiastical, political and social development of Esslingen. A real highlight for history enthusiasts who want to learn more about the roots of this remarkable city. Here too, prior registration is not necessary, but the number of participants is also limited. Entry and the tour also cost 4 euros, reduced price 2 euros, and access remains free for the young generation up to 18 years of age.

Inviting discoveries for all ages

In recent years, the archaeological findings in the excavation museum have not only been restored, but the museum equipment has also been modernized, so that visitors can expect an even better experience. So it's worth stopping by the tour of the excavation museum on November 16th.

Would you like to find out more about the fascinating origin stories of the city? Then these two tours are just right for you to experience the diversity of Esslingen up close. A real win for the whole family and a good reason to set off on Sunday!
