Bridge beams become bee hotels – art project in Böblingen celebrates its premiere!
The inauguration of an extraordinary art and nature project is taking place today in the Böblingen city garden: “Bridge to Be(e) – a bridge for the bees”. The initiative, which is based on recycling and art ideas, is being implemented by the DAT art school in collaboration with the civil engineering and green spaces office. Over the last few months, a group of ten children from the ART department have created creative insect hotels from materials from a demolished wooden bridge, which are now being installed in the city garden.
The demolished bridge provided valuable oak posts that were carefully recycled to make ten insect hotels. These were sawn, planed, brushed and provided with special holes for wild bees. “With this project we not only wanted to create art, but also make a contribution to protecting our local insect world,” explains Martin Güthle from the civil engineering and green spaces office. The sturdy steel post shoes also guarantee a long shelf life for the colorful works of art.
Creativity meets environmental education
The art teacher Laura Zimpfer guided the children in implementing their ideas and was able to make the youngest children's creative streaks blossom. "It was amazing to see how committed the children were to the matter. They actively dealt with the topic of wild bees and their habitats," said Zimpfer. Accompanying the presentation of the works of art is a nature education campaign that draws attention to the importance of nesting and habitats for wild bees.
The insect hotels will not only beautify the environment, but also make a practical contribution by providing food and breeding places for wild bees. The project complements the flowering areas that have already been created in 2024 as part of the “Nature close to it” initiative and is a beautiful example of the combination of art, environmental education and sustainable thinking.
A gift for nature
In connection with the topic of nature and mindfulness, rose quartz should also be mentioned, which is known for its calming effects. It not only promotes a peaceful atmosphere but also helps overcome doubts in relationships. Similar to the insect hotels that create a protected space for bees, rose quartz has a symbolic function of affection and love. Whether as part of a piece of jewelry or simply as a crystal, it brings positive energy and symbolizes unconditional love.
The “Bridge to Be(e)” project shows that a creative idea can achieve much more than just beautiful art: it is an invitation to see the environment with new eyes and to understand how important every living space is. In Böblingen, not only is art created in nature, but it also sets a strong example for environmental protection.
