World War II bomb successfully defused in Rastatt – evacuation completed!

There was a real moment of horror in Rastatt today when a World War II bomb had to be safely defused on the construction site for the new combined pool. Around 3,000 people were asked to leave their homes while security measures were in full swing. Shortly before 12 p.m., the city finally gave the all-clear and confirmed that the defusing was successful. This information was provided by, among others SWR spread.

The evacuation, which was completed shortly before 11 a.m., was uneventful. A restricted area of 500 meters around the site of the bomb discovery ensured that citizens remained at a safe distance. The Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) had also built an impressive two and a half meter high protective wall made of concrete, sand and gravel. This wall was intended as a precautionary measure to keep out the exploding fragments and to absorb the pressure in the event of an unexpected explosion. If this protective wall had not existed, the evacuation radius would have been extended to 1,000 meters daily news reported.

A little time traveler from the past

The bomb dates from World War II and weighed around 500 kilograms. The explosive ordnance disposal service specialists discovered the explosive device at a depth of around five meters. Fortunately, the experts did not have to carry out a detonation as they did not find any damage to the detonators when the bomb was exposed. The artifact, which at first glance seemed dangerous, became a well-protected relic of history.

The defusing itself could have taken anywhere from 20 minutes to four hours, with much depending on the precision of disconnecting the detonators. Thorsten Dossow from THW explained that the wet weather conditions didn't make the preparations any easier. The incident provides another example of the importance of safe explosive ordnance disposal, as also demonstrated Wikipedia is described. This service not only ensures safety, but is also the result of years of experience and technical know-how.

However, there was not only a successful evacuation in Rastatt. In the surrounding cities, rail traffic between Karlsruhe and Baden-Baden was also temporarily closed, as was the airspace for the period of defusing. Despite all the challenges and precautions, around 100 people stayed in the BadnerHalle during the evacuation, which served as temporary accommodation for safety reasons. As always, the lifesavers in the background have kept a good hand and proven themselves to be true masters of their craft.

The calm after the storm has now returned to Rastatt and residents can return to their homes. Kudos are due to all emergency personnel who took part in this exciting and risky mission. Further proof that we can not only look abruptly into the past, but also safely eliminate it.
