Last Thursday there was a scandalous incident at Schlossplatz in Stuttgart that shocked the public. A couple apparently indulged in vulgar sexual acts near the Duke Christopher Monument. Two children aged 10 and 11 witnessed the dubious performance. As the Stuttgarter Nachrichten reports, passers-by observed what was happening and immediately alerted the police, who then arrived and investigated the situation.
The officers temporarily arrested a 40-year-old woman and a 42-year-old man. It is suspected that the woman performed oral sex on the man while the children watched. After the police measures were completed, the two perpetrators were released. The police have launched an investigation and are asking witnesses to come forward. But that wasn't the only incident at Schlossplatz in recent months. On August 1, 2023, a 24-year-old woman was sexually harassed by five men. This incident happened in the early hours of the morning when the woman sought shelter at the Royal Building due to heavy rain. Already there, she was initially verbally harassed by a group of young men.
The situation escalated when the men touched the woman's breasts and bottom. The nightmare only ended when the woman called 911. Police officers were able to arrest four of the suspected perpetrators, aged 15 to 22, at Schlossplatz, while another 25-year-old suspect was arrested nearby. In this case, too, the suspects were released after the investigation was completed. The police in Ludwigsburg have taken over the further investigation and are also calling on witnesses to contact them on 0800/1100225 or by email.
Alarming statistics on sexual crimes
These incidents are part of a worrying trend in Germany. According to a current analysis by the BKA, the number of sexual offenses against children and young people increased significantly in 2023. In the last five years the number has more than tripled, which is not only worrying, but also brings the issues of prevention and education to the fore. In 2023, 16,375 cases were registered, an increase of 5.5% compared to the previous year.
Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser has emphasized that the focus is on dismantling the criminal structures that promote these crimes. The number of victims, 75.6% of whom are female and 55% of whom have a prior relationship with the perpetrators, also raises questions and shows the devastating social consequences of such acts. The BKA is increasingly taking measures to combat these developments, but the number of unreported cases remains alarmingly high at times.
It is all the more important that society remains aware and takes suspicions seriously. Incidents like those at Schlossplatz must be seen as a warning signal that everyone must work together to create a safe environment for children and young people.
