Women's power in Stuttgart: Wikiwomen create visibility on Wikipedia!
In Stuttgart we are working together on an important issue: making women and their topics visible on Wikipedia. The monthly meetings of the group, called Wikiwomen, bring women together to promote content about women and improve representation in the online encyclopedia. Loud SWR Only 18% of German-language Wikipedia articles are biographies of women, which shows a clear need for action.
The Wikiwomen are particularly committed to articles about female scientists, authors and politicians. “Leserättin”, one of the active members, is concerned about the visibility of female voices and their activities. The group, which has existed since 2019, has already written articles about various mayors and women from Stuttgart and Namibia. Her current goal is to give feminist non-fiction books more space on Wikipedia and thus increase their visibility. Members work anonymously to protect their personal information.
New members welcome
The Wikiwomen are open to new members who are interested in women's issues and Wikipedia. The members regularly discuss the access problems for women in technology and also refer to alternative platforms on which women are active. However, the challenge remains that only 10-15% of Wikipedia authors are women. In order to publish the articles successfully, it is necessary that they meet the relevance criteria, which means that some topics can be excluded.
The monthly meetings in the Stuttgart City Library offer members a platform to exchange experiences and create content. In doing so, they not only strengthen the visibility of women in Wikipedia, but also set an example for gender equality in the digital world.
Wikipedia – A Treasure of Humanity
Another aspect that should not be forgotten when it comes to Wikipedia is the financing of this valuable source of information. How on Wikipedia.org can be read, a fundraising campaign is being carried out to support the platform. Readers in the US are asked to donate a small amount of at least $2.75. Wikipedia has been around for almost 25 years now and provides a human-made resource independent of large technology companies.
Most donors do so because they value Wikipedia's usefulness and recognize its importance in disseminating information. Given the increasing importance of reliable sources of information, supporting Wikipedia is more important than ever to ensure the availability of such content for generations to come.
The commitment of the Wikiwomen in Stuttgart and the ongoing support of Wikipedia are steps in the right direction to increase the visibility of women in the online world and maintain the importance of this platform.
