Terrible deeds and great events: what happened on June 14th?

Today, June 14, 2025, we are looking at a day that is not only important for the names Eppo and Gottschalk noted on the calendar, but also decorates history with striking events. In today's world it is important to take a look at the past, and not without reason! These historical events have shaped the shadows and bright spots of our present.

An event that goes straight to the heart of German history is this Signing of the Schengen Agreement in 1985, which regulated the free movement of people between Germany, France and the Benelux countries. A real advancement that has shaped an entire generation of travelers!

Events on June 14th

If you look at the past few years, other formative events in history reveal themselves. In 2000, a gunman killed three police officers in Dortmund and Waltrop before committing suicide. Such tragic incidents move our minds and give us pause.

But other events, such as the attack by 100 heavily armed Chechens on a hospital in Budyonnovsk in 1995, also leave sad accents in our memories, where at least 120 people lost their lives.

June 14th also touched culture lovers: in 1925 the exhibition “New Objectivity. German Painting since Expressionism” opened in the Mannheim Kunsthalle. A real treat for art lovers!

Birthday child and remembrance

Of course, we shouldn't forget the prominent birthday children: Annemarie Gerg and Peer Kusmagk are celebrating their 50th birthday today, they are bringing a breath of fresh air into the German sports and television landscape. We also remember Jörg Immendorff, who was born in 1945 and was laid to rest in 2007. His works are still of great importance today.

Another obituary is in memory of Helmut Fischer, who passed away on June 14, 1997. As a master of acting in the well-known TV series “Monaco Franze”, he will never be forgotten.

A look at German history

In a larger context, it becomes clear that June 14th is just one date among many in Germany's rich and often eventful history. Of the Coronation of Charlemagne in the year 800, which laid the foundation for the Holy Roman Empire, to Martin Luther's revolt that initiated the Reformation, to the founding of the German Empire in 1871 - each of these eras shaped Germany and influenced its people.

We cannot forget how the division of Germany after World War II tore many families apart and how the Wall became a symbol of division before its fall in 1989 brought us reunification. Our past teaches us to value the present and shape the future.

So as we see, June 14th is more than just a date. It is a mirror of history, full of light and shadow, encouraging us to reflect and learn.
