175 years of Geislinger Steige: A celebration of trains and old times!
Last weekend, Geislingen an der Steige celebrated a very special anniversary: The Geislinger Steige train route was opened 175 years ago, on June 28, 1850. This unique connection between the valleys has shaped the city and is still very popular today. The celebrations, which lasted two days, attracted large numbers of visitors and transformed the city into a lively festival.
The atmosphere was particularly melodious, accompanied by the sounds of the trains. On Sunday, a classic car meeting in the old town rounded off the event. While visitors admired the historic vehicles, there was also a Sunday shopping event, when the shops were visited by numerous customers.
Celebrations and highlights
A highlight of the event was the ceremonial train christening, to which well-known guests were also invited. Among them were Fabian Amini von Arverio, Dean Martin Ehrler, the outgoing mayor Frank Dehmer as well as Transport Minister Winfried Hermann and the constituency representative Nicole Razavi (CDU). Pastor Dietrich Crüsemann was also there and contributed to the festive atmosphere.
Visitors were able to find out more about the various offers and local transport at many information stands from Deutsche Bahn AG, Arverio, bwegt, the VVS and the Filstal energy supply. For the children there was a colorful play carpet and a wheel of fortune at the VVS stand, where they could win great prizes, including tickets for special trips on the Geislinger Steige. The DB Regio provided a realistic driving simulator that was a popular destination for technology enthusiasts, while a selfie with the mascot “bine bwegt” could be taken at the bwegt stand.
Insights into the past and future of rail transport
The event was not only a look back at 175 years of railway history, but also took a look into the future of rail transport. The working group of museum railways in Baden-Württemberg presented their projects and thus offered visitors the opportunity to get an overview of the development of rail transport in the region.
The positive feedback from visitors and the festive mood in the city show that the Geislinger Steige will remain an important part of the regional infrastructure and social life in the coming years. As the city administration emphasizes, the goal is to further promote the “Geislinger Steige” project in order to make rail transport even more attractive.
The celebrations made it clear that the interest and joy in traveling by train remains unbroken and the importance of the Geislinger Steige in the region is high. We can already look forward to the next 175 years!
