In Esslingen, property owners currently have the opportunity to benefit from a unique initiative that focuses on the energy-efficient renovation of buildings. The city is now offering 100 free on-site consultations, which are implemented in collaboration with the Baden-Württemberg consumer advice center and the Esslingen district climate protection agency. This campaign will take place in November and December and is intended to help bring Esslingen one step closer to climate neutrality by 2040. Esslinger Zeitung reports that owners can conveniently book their consultations online.
To make the consultations as efficient as possible, homeowners are asked to bring some basic information about their properties. Key data such as living space, year of construction and current electricity and heat consumption are crucial in order to receive well-founded tips for renovation. In addition, energy profiles are available for all Esslingen buildings. These offer an initial assessment of heat requirements and savings potential and are based on a 3D city model and current weather data. They were developed in cooperation with the climate start-up “Fünf PERCENT” and a research team from the Stuttgart University of Technology.
Climate protection through renovation
Katja Walther, head of the Sustainability and Climate Protection Department, highlights the great potential that energy-saving renovations offer in Esslingen. Almost 50% of the residential buildings here were built before 1950, highlighting the need for measures to improve energy efficiency. In the city, private households, along with businesses, are the largest consumers of thermal energy and therefore contribute significantly to the CO2 balance. Special recommendations for building renovations include improving insulation and installing new heating technology, for example by connecting to district heating or using heat pumps. In view of the legal requirements of the Building Energy Act, new heating systems in Esslingen must be powered by at least 65% renewable energy from summer 2028.

A central term in the current discussion about energy renovation is the energy profile. This provides information about the heat requirements of the house, the savings potential and the cost-effectiveness of the measures. The solar potential of the roofs is also analyzed. In addition, the Esslingen District Climate Protection Agency offers free consultations and gives valuable tips on renovation and possible funding.
The Esslingen public utilities are also ready to provide support. They offer advice on topics such as building, modernizing and renovating and provide information about the possibility of connecting to the environmentally friendly heating network, which already supplies 12% of households. The availability of this network can be checked online, which makes planning for a sustainable heat supply much easier.
