30 years of the City Senior Council: Strong together for the older generation!
There's a lot going on in Esslingen, and it's not just reserved for younger people. The City Senior Councilor Esslingen is celebrating a special anniversary this year: 30 years of successful advocacy for the older generation. The association's mission is not only to promote social participation, but also to offer innovative services that enrich life for seniors.
A highlight are the smartphone courses that the city senior council offers in cooperation with two local schools. This initiative aims to teach older people how to use modern technology and bridge the digital divide. The courses are free and are aimed not only at members, but at all interested seniors. The city is once again demonstrating its commitment to supporting an active and self-determined lifestyle in old age.
A look back at three decades
Recently, first chairman Josef Birk emphasized the importance of interpersonal relationships and the importance of bringing people together. “A voice for the older generation” – this is how Social Mayor Yalcin Bayraktar put it. In the past, however, there were reservations about the establishment of the city senior council. Udo Goldmann, former social and regulatory mayor, remembered the skepticism in local politics when the idea of another committee came up. But the vision of indispensable commitment to the needs of older people has proven to have a promising future.
The focus has changed: It is no longer just about care and homes, but rather about a wide range of leisure and advisory services that counteract isolation and poverty in old age. Renate Schaumburg, chairwoman of the district senior council, emphasizes that the neutrality of the city senior council is an important instrument. The association has provided advice in many political committees, such as the Social Committee. Successes such as the reintroduction of the city ticket and the plans for barrier-free toilets in the city center underline the work of the city senior council.
Future prospects
The next steps of the city senior council have already been clearly outlined. The silhouette of modern work for seniors is created here: events and projects that enrich the everyday lives of older people are firmly planned. It is important to maintain contact with the younger generations in order to promote mutual understanding and strengthen bridges between generations. The offering is diverse and is aimed at all age groups – a real enrichment for Esslingen.
The city senior council remains a living example of how integration and participation can be achieved. With the support of the city senior citizens' council, older citizens in Esslingen not only have a voice, but also the opportunity to actively participate in social life.
