The lions are celebrating their touching promotion after nine years!
On June 16, 1991, a new era began for TSV 1860 Munich. After nine long years in the Bayernliga, around 30,000 jubilant fans celebrated the promotion of the traditional club on Giesing's heights and at Marienplatz. Under coach Karsten Wettberg, the team secured participation in the promotion round to the 2nd Bundesliga by winning the Bayernliga, but this was marked by nerves and drama. Only one place in the 2nd league was reserved for the promoted teams, which increased the pressure even more.
The promotion round began for the Lions with a 1-1 draw against VfR Neunkirchen, followed by two draws against FC Pforzheim and KSV Hessen Kassel. The turning point came with an impressive 4-1 win against Pforzheim and a 2-0 win over Kassel. In a nerve-wracking final home game, TSV needed a point against Borussia Neunkirchen to ensure promotion. Horst Schmidbauer and Roland Kneißl secured the 2-0 win with their goals, which sent the fans into ecstasy. You can't imagine the celebration and the storming of the place any other way. On a memorable day, Karsten Wettberg gave the city the sentence: “Sixty was never relegated in sport, but was promoted again in sport!”
The promotion and the 1991/92 season
The 1991/92 season was special as it was the first in which teams from the former GDR played in the 2nd Bundesliga. A total of 24 teams took part – divided into north and south relays. In addition to TSV 1860 Munich, 1. FC Saarbrücken and Bayer 05 Uerdingen also managed to fight their way through the promotion round. The exciting constellation led to a number of surprises, including the relegation of TSV 1860 after a turbulent season.
In the regular round, the Munich team only recorded mediocre performances in the first half and ultimately had to make the bitter journey back to the Bayernliga via relegation against Fortuna Cologne and TSV Havelse. In the relegation they had to admit defeat with 0:1 and 1:4 and thus return to the Lower Saxony Amateur Oberliga.
Statistics and records in the 2nd Bundesliga
As history shows, the 2nd Bundesliga was an arena of great emotions from the start. Records are constantly being broken here. 1. FC Nürnberg is the relegation record holder with nine departures from the Bundesliga, while SpVgg Greuther Fürth has anchored itself in the history books with 1,806 goals. In contrast, there are also sad records, like that of Pirmasens, who caused a stir with 120 goals conceded. These and many other statistics make the second division one of the most competitive football leagues in the world.
The focus always remains exciting on the promotions and relegations of this league-typical rollercoaster ride. The promotion coach Friedhelm Funkel, for example, shows with his six promotions that coaching successes can also take on historical dimensions. It remains to be seen what stories the coming seasons in the 2nd Bundesliga will bring us. The fans' football hearts beat soaring and the anticipation of what follows remains unbroken.
For many, the promotion of TSV 1860 Munich in 1991 will always remain a special moment that fans will remember with joy. Things can happen so quickly in the world of football - that's also the fascination of this sport.
