Jewish mosaic in the garden of religions: savior at the last minute!
In the heart of Karlsruhe, the Jewish mosaic in the garden of religions has received a fresh touch. The restoration, under the direction of Carlo Jorias from the “Mosaik Bau und Handel” company from Bensheim, began on Tuesday, May 20, 2025. The use of modern, weather -resistant materials aims to preserve the original character of the mosaic, which represents the seven fruits of the Holy Land in Davidstern and thus symbolizes Judaism.
The need for repair was found in autumn 2024 when an attentive citizen reported the willful damage. A political motive could not be ruled out in the crime, which prompted the city of Karlsruhe to file a complaint. The destruction is clearly visible: numerous stones have been broken out, and larger areas of the mosaic now need extensive repairs. Mayor Frank Mentrup (SPD) was concerned about the events, especially since the garden is a place of contemplation and reflection.
The garden of religions as an intercultural memorial
The garden of religions is not only a place of encounter, but also an intercultural memorial location that represents the content of seven religions in Karlsruhe. This presentation is done by a variety of symbols, quotations and floor mosaics. The garden is framed by three steles with extracts of basic and human rights, which underline the importance of freedom and respect.
"Because the garden has arisen from civic engagement, it has a special importance for the city of Karlsruhe," says a city representative. The place, which was launched in 2015 for the city birthday, is intended to invite people not only to linger, but also to actively participate in interreligious dialogues. Wisdoms from all over the world can also be read on a small outer walls that promote peaceful coexistence despite religious differences.
a place for everyone
The garden is open to everyone who is interested in peaceful coexistence. It is designed as a public space that can be consulted both specifically and invites you to look at it. In addition to the restoration of the mosaic, there are also numerous events and guided tours in the garden that take place from June to September and give professionals the opportunity to find out about religious diversity and their symbolism.
For everyone who is interested in participating, individual inquiries about possible dates are expressly welcome. This ensures that the garden remains a place of inspiration and intercultural exchange.
