Ettlingen: Voluntary cleaning stumbling blocks - signs against right -wing extremism!
Ettlingen, Deutschland - In Ettlingen, memory of the victims of National Socialism is kept alive. On Tuesday, volunteers diligently 50 , which have been laid since 2010 by the artist Gunter Demnig. These small brass boards are embedded in the sidewalk and are reminiscent of the last self -selected places of residence of people who were murdered by the National Socialists.
The use of around seven helpers, supported by numerous spectators, was not only a cleaning campaign, but also a strong signal against right -wing extremism. The Ettlingen alliance against racism and neo -Nazis, which has been active since 2005, has already organized the annual cleaning campaigns. These events are a central component of memorial culture in the region and should continue to provide information about racism and fascism.
a moving moment
artist Liane Holl convinced those present during the campaign with the life stories of the victims. The stumbling block for Berta Krieg, which died in Kaufbeuren in 1945, was among the cleaned stones. The stumbling blocks for families Spielmann and Bodenheimer were also polished to a high gloss. Dieter Behringer, one of the organizers, recalled the threats of neo -Nazis, which led to the foundation of the alliance in 2005.
The volunteers also attached great importance to the fact that young people were actively involved in the actions. Their participation in cleaning the stumbling blocks shows that a new generation can be obtained for the culture of remembrance. "A person is only forgotten when his name is forgotten," says Demnig the Talmud, and that is exactly what is done with the stumbling blocks - the memory is kept alive.
a tour of memory
For the future, a 6.8 kilometer -long city tour of twelve stumbling block stations is planned, which leads visitors through Ettlingen and offers them the opportunity to think about the life stories of the victims. The stations include Pforzheimer Straße 10 and 57 as well as the old police exit in Sternegasse. There are a total of 50 stumbling blocks in Ettlingen: 16 for Jews, 25 for euthanasia victims, 8 for forced laborers and 1 for a person classified as an anti -being.
The Stumbling Stone for Berta War was not the only one who was polished during the campaign. The next stumbling block, whose relocation is in preparation, comes with costs of 120 euros.
Finally, it should be noted that the project, which was launched by Gunter Demnig in 1993, is now anchored in over 920 villages and cities in Germany and several European countries. Over 45,000 stumbling blocks have been relocated to this day, and the idea continues to live, supported by groups, schools and committed citizens who stand up for the history and commemoration of the victims.
