Drone causes emergency landing: Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden airport closed!
On Saturday morning, Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport was closed for half an hour. The reason for this was a sighting of a drone that was reported by a resident of a neighboring community. The Offenburg police then confirmed the sighting of an aircraft near the runways, which led to a preventive closure of flight operations. Emergency services were able to briefly see the drone before it disappeared when a police helicopter arrived. However, there was no clarity about the origin and control of the drone. This was the first drone sighting in the immediate vicinity of the airport, which required flight operations to be suspended. A plane from Sofia had to be diverted to Strasbourg due to this situation, but Chancellor Merz was no longer affected by this blockage a few hours later when he arrived at the airport to take part in the Junge Union's Germany Day in Rust near Freiburg.
As SWR reports, drone sightings are increasing near airports, especially at Stuttgart Airport. This not only causes concern among those responsible, but also affects flight operations locally.
New flight connections and positive development
Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport (FKB) is not only in the news because of the drone sightings. In the coming summer season, the range of flight connections will be significantly expanded. From May 19th, the airline Condor will serve the route to Palma de Mallorca, offering flights every Tuesday and Sunday. These can be booked in economy and business class and include, among other things, a free middle seat and additional baggage allowance, which makes the trip even more pleasant.
In addition, Mavi Gök Airlines is starting flights to Antalya for Anex Tour and FTI, while Ryanair is expanding its offering to include four new destinations: From the beginning of April, the planes will fly to Dubrovnik, Banja Luka and Tangier, each twice a week. Ryanair also offers flights to Agadir in the summer.
Since its opening in 1997, FKB has established itself as the second largest commercial airport in Baden-Württemberg, only behind Stuttgart. In 2023, an impressive 1,743,808 passengers were welcomed, an increase of 32.6% compared to the previous year and even putting the airport around 30% above pre-pandemic levels in 2019. With 41,000 take-offs and landings, there was also an increase of 9.3% compared to the previous year, showing that the airport continues to perform well despite the challenges of drone sightings and other incidents.
