Münster triumphs at the ADFC bicycle climate test: 1st place for cyclists!

Münster is once again a pioneer in cycling friendliness and secures first place in the category of cities with 200,000 to 500,000 inhabitants at the ADFC bicycle climate test 2024. The Münsteraner is pleased, because the city has successfully prevailed in the ranking against strong competitors such as Freiburg im Breisgau and Karlsruhe. Christian Schmelter, the department head of urban mobility planning, was solemnly accepted in Berlin. A clear sign that Münster is on the right track!

Mayor Markus Lewe is certain: "The result shows the strong commitment of our citizens for the cycling friendliness in our city." City building councilor Robin Denstorff is also pleased about the new developments that contribute to the high satisfaction of the cyclists. Among other things, new bicycle roads such as Schillerstrasse and Dieckstraße were implemented. In total, Münster has over 16 kilometers of bicycle roads. In addition, the digital cycling infrastructure with 13 bicycle traffic counting points is well developed.

innovations and improvements in cycling

Since 2024, new bike service stations have been available in Münster, where cyclists: inside can use air pumps. The introduction of green arrows at intersections was also implemented to make it easier to turn for cyclists: on the inside. Nevertheless, not all voices are euphoric: the Volt party criticizes the evaluation of the ADFC as "satisfactory" and still sees need for improvement in the cycling infrastructure. The CDU Münster, on the other hand, emphasizes the need for a balanced transport policy and the SPD demands adaptive lighting on the channel promenade.

The ADFC bicycle climate test is the greatest survey to satisfaction from cyclists worldwide. In this year's survey, over 212,811 people from 1,047 municipalities took part. Around 2,700 cyclists took part in Münster, who were able to submit their assessments of bicycle friendliness via questionnaire. The results from this survey, which was carried out between September and November 2024, are not only a indicator of the current status, but also an important instrument for traffic planners: inside and political decision -making rooms.

look into the future and outlook for the next test

A look into the future shows that the next ADFC bicycle climate test will start on September 1, 2024. On this date, cyclists have the opportunity to share their experiences and opinions on bicycle friendliness in their places of residence. The future rankings will be significantly influenced on the basis of 27 questions on topics such as security and traffic. The results of this survey will be presented in Berlin in spring 2025.

Participation in this test not only offers an insight into the satisfaction of the cyclists, but also helps municipalities to improve their offers for cyclists. It remains exciting which developments we can watch in Münster and other cities up to the next results! Meanwhile, the city remains a prime example of successful cycling promotion and a model for other municipalities in Germany.
