Change and dialogue: Ostalbkreis fights against psychological stigmatization!

Last Saturday, the Mental Health Avareness Day took place in the Neckarquartier area in Wendligen, which is entirely devoted to the goal of tabooing mental illnesses. The event brought together those affected, relatives, specialists and interested parties of a wide range of age groups. In Germany, almost a third of the population develop mental problems every year - around 18 million people are. Here it becomes clear that the topic must be on the agenda.

The responsibility of the church extends not only to the spiritual accompaniment, but also to the support of people with mental illnesses. Andreas Ruiner, pastoral officer, emphasized this role during the event, which was organized by the “Werwas.Fyi” network and financed by the Diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart. With a program of over 20 offers, including workshops on topics such as depression, mindfulness yoga and suicide prevention, the participants were able to expand their horizons.

rising number of participants and diverse topics

The general meeting of the KEB Ostalbkreis, which took place this year in the Köder Museum in Ellwangen's winner, illustrates the growing interest in these important topics. The number of participation rose by 44 percent last year, which shows that the address about mental health and social questions falls on fertile soil. A total of 105 own educational events were carried out, for which 44,000 euros were made available for educational projects in the parishes. The CEO Ludwig Hammel stated that the church was willing to accept the challenges in society.

The broad spectrum of the topics treated was particularly exciting, which ranged from the detabilization of mental illnesses to political and interreligious dialogue to the information on the legalization of cannabis. Ana de Requesens Moll reported on booked events and emphasized the role of the KEB as a sought -after partner in current social discussions.

Remove

stigmatization and provide help

Especially in society, the stigmatization of mental illnesses is still a big issue. Professor Dr. Nicolas Rüsch, an expert in this area, indicates that the negative assessment of those affected can often have worse consequences than the illness itself. The German Center for Mental Health (DZPG) has launched the project "Stand by dignity" in order to reduce stigma in mental illnesses and help those affected to address their illness more openly.

A worldwide study shows that about 80 percent of people with schizophrenia or depression experience stigmatization. Often members of mentally ill people are also affected and also fight against discrimination. Programs that promote social contact between affected and non-affected people prove to be particularly effective in reducing prejudices and stigmatization.

With these initiatives, not only is it cleared up, but a concrete contribution is also made to support people in difficult times and make their lives a bit easier. The KEB Ostalbkreis and the Church as a whole show a sensitive sense of social issues and actively contribute to promoting dialogue and supporting change.

The general meeting ended with honors of service anniversaries and a lively exchange about the topics discussed and the next steps to counter the challenges. And while we are looking at 2025, one is certain: Sieger Kader, who would have been 100 years old this year, would have greeted this conversations.
