Avian influenza in the Alb-Donau district: Strict measures for companies!
Avian influenza, also known as bird flu, has struck in the Alb-Donau district. How Press Augsburg reported, the highly pathogenic avian influenza virus H5N1 was confirmed. As a result, the veterinary authority takes immediate measures to prevent the spread of the disease.
In response to the outbreak, a protection zone was established with a radius of 3 kilometers around the affected establishment. In addition, a surveillance zone was defined that extends into the northern area of the Neu-Ulm district. This affects a total of 35 companies. It is important to note that this surveillance zone can only be lifted after 30 days at the earliest.
Strict regulations and recommendations
The regulations in the surveillance zone are extremely stringent. This includes a ban on the movement of live birds, eggs or poultry meat. In addition, there is a strict obligation to keep all birds in stables, with the exception of pigeons. Entering stables is only permitted with the company's own or disposable protective clothing, and special changing clothes are also required for staff. All abnormalities must be reported immediately to the veterinary service.
By the way, poultry farmers outside this monitoring zone are also asked to take special precautionary measures. It is therefore advised to house the poultry and adhere to stricter biosecurity measures. In concrete terms, this means avoiding contact with wild birds and securing food and bedding from their access.
Overview of the situation in Austria
There is currently an increase in the number of outbreaks in Europe, both in wild birds and domestic poultry. Germany and Italy have been reporting large populations affected since the beginning of October. In the Czech Republic and Slovakia, small farms in particular are affected. Avian influenza represents a highly contagious threat, especially to chickens and turkeys, if we consider the accelerating spread of this disease.
It is important for poultry farmers in affected areas to immediately report any birds found dead as well as suspected cases in kept animals to the district administrative authority. An active surveillance program is in place to detect outbreaks early and take appropriate action.
Current events call us to be vigilant. Any commitment to adhering to biosecurity measures can ultimately be crucial in protecting domestic populations and preventing the spread of this dangerous virus. Further information and current regulations can also be found on the Neu-Ulm district website.
