Traffic chaos threatens: Angelbachtal bridge on A6 will not be renewed until 2027!

The A6 motorway between Walldorf and Sinsheim faces a significant challenge: the Angelbachtal Bridge, which has been heavily used since it was built in 1967, will be renewed in 2027. This reports Heidelberg24. The new construction is necessary to ensure long-term traffic safety after the bridge was rebuilt in 2015. It has been clear for some time that the start of construction has been postponed several times; it was originally planned for 2024. ViA6West now plans that work will probably not begin until 2027, with numerous hurdles still to be overcome.

A slow approval process suggests that preparations could take longer than expected. Residents and commuters must prepare for the possibility of traffic restrictions, even if a full closure of the A6 is not planned. Initially, two lanes in each direction will be available during the construction period; in the later phase the capacity could even be expanded to five lanes.

Traffic situation in the construction site area

The situation in the construction site area is complicated: There have been several accidents in the past that led to traffic jams. The need for further new bridge construction in the Sinsheim area could place additional strain on the traffic situation. Only recently, in June 2025, construction work on the B292 near Sinsheim was completed, which affected regional traffic and resulted in numerous closures.

The residents and commuters in the region are given a hot potato. The renewal of the Angelbachtal Bridge could bring about significant changes to traffic and local infrastructure. Despite the difficulties and challenges that construction brings, there are also calculations and planning for a long-term solution.

In the meantime, the question arises about the future design of traffic flow. The replacement building should not only ease the existing traffic situation, but also be future-proof. It will be interesting to see how the plans develop and what progress will be made when construction begins. So that citizens can benefit from a safe transport route both during the construction period and after the bridge is completed.
