Remembrance Day commemoration: Hockenheim remembers the victims!
A significant commemoration of Remembrance Day will take place in Hockenheim on November 16, 2025. The event – an annual commemoration of the victims of war and tyranny – is of great importance to the city community. Organized by the Hockenheim city administration together with the German War Graves Commission. V., the celebrations begin at 11:15 a.m. at the local cemetery. Mayor Marcus Zeitler will welcome those present and the event will be complemented by a wreath-laying ceremony performed by representatives of various associations.
The gathering on Remembrance Day is not only an act of remembrance, but also a reminder of understanding, tolerance and peace. During the celebration, the names of those who lost their lives in both world wars, under the National Socialist regime and in other conflicts around the world will also be mentioned. A prayer, spoken by Elke Neuschäfer on behalf of the Protestant Church, will underline the contemplative atmosphere.
A quiet day of remembrance
Remembrance Day, which is traditionally celebrated two Sundays before the first Advent, not only honors fallen soldiers, but also remembers civilians and victims of violent oppression. It has been celebrated in Germany since its modern introduction in 1952 and has since become an important tradition. In many federal states there are special restrictions on public events on this day in order to preserve the quiet dignity of commemoration. For example, music and dance events are banned in some regions.
Remembrance Day falls on November 16th this year, a date that falls between November 13th and 19th. With the move to the post-war period, a clear signal was sent against the fascist past. Remembrance Day is not recognized as a public holiday, but it is observed as a quiet day in many parts of Germany. Offices, banks and schools remain closed, and public transport follows a Sunday timetable.
Participation and music
The people of Hockenheim are cordially invited to take part in the memorial service. In addition to the official speeches and the prayer, the saxophone ensemble of the Hockenheim city band will provide the musical accompaniment, which will underline the celebratory setting. Visitors are asked to arrive on time as parking is available near the cemetery.
In Germany, on this day, various cities and communities also commemorate the suffering and tears that wars have brought. In addition to the official memorial event in the German Bundestag, at which the Federal President speaks, numerous other ceremonies take place. These not only focus on the events of the past war, but also help to illustrate the tragedy of war and actively promote peace.
