Groundbreaking ceremony for Heidelberg's new heart center: innovation for everyone!

On October 24, 2025, the symbolic groundbreaking ceremony was held for a new heart center in Heidelberg. The Ministry for Social Affairs and Integration Baden-Württemberg reports that the new heart center will be built on the site of the former children's clinic at Heidelberg University Hospital (UKHD). This marks a significant step in improving cardiac care for patients of all ages suffering from heart disease.

The heart center will be a central contact point for inpatient treatment, emergencies and special diagnostics. The planned integration of cardiac prevention, diagnostics and therapy under one roof is intended to optimize patient care. Facilities such as eight operating rooms, two of which are hybrid rooms, as well as eight catheter laboratories and 235 fully inpatient beds are planned. Outside the heart center will be the “Informatics for Life” research institute, which will focus on improving and personalizing patient care through health data research.

Competence bundling and research

The aim of the new building is to combine the cardiac medicine competencies of the University Hospital and the Heidelberg Medical Faculty. The organizers of the press invitation emphasize that the disciplines of cardiology, angiology, cardiac surgery, pediatric cardiology, pediatric cardiac surgery and cardio-anesthesia will be combined in the new center. Given the planned digital infrastructure, the aim is to use care data to personalize cardiac medicine.

A particular focus is on the scientific support of the “Informatics for Life” institute, which also investigates the application of artificial intelligence in personalized cardiac medicine. In addition, the so-called “Industry-on-Campus” concept is being implemented, allowing companies from the IT and medical technology sectors to enter into innovation partnerships and use on-site research areas.

Financing and construction time

The total costs for the heart center amount to around 557 million euros. This is largely financed by the support of the state of Baden-Württemberg as well as generous donations from the Dietmar Hopp Foundation and the Klaus Tschira Foundation. Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann, who was present at the groundbreaking ceremony, emphasizes how important such projects are for the future of healthcare.

With the heart center scheduled to go into operation in 2029 and the first patient treatments scheduled for 2030, the client, Heidelberg University Hospital, has its goals clearly in mind. Creating a fully digital hospital is seen as a game-changer in the industry.

Overall, we look forward to seeing how the heart center and research institute develop in order to positively influence the health future of the region.
