Future of the Germany ticket: Looming price increases in BW!

On Friday, June 27, 2025, the transport ministers meet the federal states to advise on the further financing of the Germany ticket. This conference takes place in the context of the increasing popularity of the ticket in Baden-Württemberg, where every fifth uses the offer. The positive response is also reflected in the use of local public transport (public transport), whereby the traffic service has partially doubled on certain routes, as [SWR] reports.

Although a price increase of the Germany ticket, which is currently 58 euros per month, led to a decrease of 6% when buying ticket purchases last year, sales now show increasing tendencies again. For the years 2023 and 2024, the federal government provided 1.5 billion euros each to secure the continuation of the ticket, and is also planning for 2025. In addition, the federal states also contribute 1.5 billion euros to compensate for income losses from the transport companies.

financing and pricing models

The Federal Minister of Transport Patrick Schnieder has spoken out for the introduction of a stable price mechanism in order to ensure permanent financing of the Germany ticket. "The offer must be so attractive that it wears itself," says Schnieder. This is all the more important, since the financing of the regionalization law, which is currently valid by 2025, is considered insufficient with regard to the increasing costs of the traffic industry. The federal states require planning security and a coverage of possible additional costs by the federal government. [Tagesschau] emphasizes that the coalition agreement between the CDU, CSU and SPD was stipulated to continue the Germany ticket beyond 2025.

The discussion about price guarantees and possibly back prices will already be loud. Greens make a proposal to return at a price of 49 euros per month. By 2029, however, users should prepare for possible further price adjustments, while political pressure on a permanent solution is growing.

consumer interest and demand

The current situation illustrates that local public transport in Germany is still very popular. The Germany ticket now has over 13 million users. [SPIEGEL] reports on the financial situation in which federal states cannot apply more than the previously specified 1.5 billion euros per year due to tense budget situations. Nevertheless, the attractiveness of the ticket offer is still required so that it remains as a sustainable option for passengers.

The threat of a price increase from 2026 nevertheless ensures concern among users and transport companies. It remains to be seen whether the measures of the political decision -makers will take place in good time in order to preserve the Germany ticket in its currently popular form and to continue to promote its positive effects on public transport.
