Friendship becomes a hurdle: Visit from Togo ends in prison!

Rems-Murr-Kreis, Deutschland - What moves people in the Rems-Murr district? A recent incident causes excitement and stimulates thinking. Actually, a long-term friendship visit in the Rems-Murr district should be a warm meeting with Jean from Togo. Instead, he previously ended up in a prison, which the family and the entire community were involved. When arriving at Paris-Charles-de-Gaulle Airport, Jean was brought by border officials in the so-called "Zone d’Astente"-a waiting area that the officers call "hotel"-which made the Situation appear even absurd. People who land there are often difficult to leave the area. Return is possible at any time, but that doesn't make things easier.

The family from the Rems-Murr district fought intensively with Jean, and the walk to prison initially seemed like an insurmountable obstacle. One wonders: What is going wrong in German and European asylum and residence rights? In fact, the funds of the authorities are not always clear, and the hurdles for foreigners can be considerable. The Landratsamt Rems-Murr informs that the foreign law department is responsible for the residence law care of foreigners and Foreigners. The electronic residence permit (EAT) can be picked up without an appointment during office hours, but only if it is already available for collection. The following also applies here: avoid stress, especially in view of the often long waiting times for other services.

The laws in focus

The new regulations include the introduction of digital and biometrically correct photographs for the residence permit that has been in force since May 1, 2025. A small step for the administrative authorities, but a large one for the people concerned who are dependent on quick and smooth processing.

At the moment, Ukrainian refugees who have a special residence permit and work permits according to § 24 Residence Act do not have to worry about their validity: they automatically keep their validity until 04.03.2026. This shows that despite the difficulties of the residence permits, rectals can also bring.

Back to Jean and his desperate situation: If family members or friends are abroad and get into difficulties, this is not only an emotional burden, but also a challenge systems that are often associated with bureaucratic hurdles. It remains to be hoped that such incidents as a visit by Jean from Togo will not be repeated and that the understanding of the problems of people in similar situations will grow. The use of the family from the Rems-Murr district, which they actively support, must be particularly appreciated.

This episode shows us that life in the Rems-Murr district is not only shaped by beautiful moments, but also by challenges that require solidarity and understanding. A good reason for all of us to listen to each other and work together on a solution, so that friendship visits become a reason for joy and not for confusion.
