New city garden in Echterdingen: Start of the green transformation!
Leinfelden-Echterdingen is planning a new city garden in Echterdingen with sustainable energy and green projects.

New city garden in Echterdingen: Start of the green transformation!
Something is happening in Echterdingen: the city garden in the historic center is finally taking shape. The first preparatory measures will soon begin on an area that extends east of the old school building. These new developments are a step towards the city's green future, with the project's groundbreaking ceremony scheduled for early November following the expiry of the lease. Like the city administration of Leinfelden-Echterdingen reported, the area between the old schoolhouse, Burgstrasse, Im Wengert, Bismarckstrasse and the Protestant community center will be reorganized.
The first steps in the transformation include clearing necessary to make room for a new energy center. As part of the project, this will be linked to a heating network that is intended to make the energy supply more efficient. The focus is particularly on generating geothermal energy using modern probe technology in order to reduce CO2 emissions in the city.
Green light for innovative projects
The plans for the city garden are not just any urban design project, but part of the grand strategy to achieve the climate goals. Changing the heat supply in urban areas is crucial for effective climate protection. So reported BDEW that a complete transformation of urban energy production is necessary to achieve these goals. In cities like Berlin, which have extensive city heating networks, CO2 emissions have been reduced by more than half since 1990. Similar ambitions are also being pursued in Echterdingen.
Another aspect of the project in Echterdingen is the active participation of citizens. Creative ideas for designing the city garden were collected at a community workshop in November 2024. The results of this initiative are incorporated into current planning and promise to create a space that is attractive for residents as well as the entire city.
Looking into the future
The implementation of the energy center and the heating network in Echterdingen is an important step towards a sustainable energy supply. Once these central facilities have been completed, the outdoor areas and the city garden will be redesigned in a further phase. The current planning work is expected to be completed by February 2026, when the results of an urban design competition will be published.
While the first work in Wengert begins at the end of October, residents will be informed separately in order to minimize possible disruption.
