Echterdingen: Container Village is broken down - what's coming now?

In Leinfelden-Echterdingen there is a significant change: the container village on the Renault site will be mined by the end of 2025. There are currently still 118 people there, the capacity of use is 264 people. The city has reacted to the noticeably declining access figures for asylum seekers. Mayor Carl-Gustav Kalbfell announced that only 50 to 60 new asylum seekers have been recorded in the Esslingen district in recent months. In June 2025, only 30 refugees were assigned to the district, which caused the city to accommodate fewer than three people, according to the specified rate of 7.5 percent of these assignments.

Thanks to this development, the city can achieve significant savings. The degradation of the container village saves almost 90,000 euros per month, which adds up to an annual saving of one million euros. The monthly cost block for the container village has so far comprised almost 60,000 euros in basic rent and various additional costs. "It just doesn't make sense to spend money unnecessarily," says Kalbfell. A large part of these savings flows into the construction of permanent accommodations instead of investing in expensive rental accommodation.

permanent solutions instead of container

The container village was only a temporary solution that was originally created for two years. But this period is not being extended. The city has already set up rental containers in the Schelmenäcker development area, where the first refugees have moved in. Another planned location on Dieselstrasse could offer space for up to 450 people, whereby the conversion of the former office towers on Dieselstrasse will cost the city a low double -digit million amount. The local administration has founded a citizens' committee to actively involve citizens in planning new accommodations and to avoid possible conflicts in advance.

One of the challenges in accommodation of refugees are the frequent conflicts that can arise. According to a research report by the German Association of Cities and Municipalities, such conflicts are often the result of inadequate communication and participation. The report emphasizes the need for a comprehensive strategy that includes measures to prevent violence, conflict management and social participation in order to ensure the smoothest possible integration of the refugees. So it is important to include all actors - from refugees to residents and administrative employees.

outlook for the future

While the city is working on new accommodation options to create sustainable solutions, concern also increases about the social integration of the refugees. It is therefore crucial that the city of Leinfelden-Echterdingen not only invests in the construction projects, but also in promoting social participation and intercultural competence. The Citizens' Committee plays a central role in promoting social acceptance and cooperation and possibly developing conflicts at an early stage.

Overall, it can be seen that the city is working on a long-term solution that meets the needs of the refugees and the residents and makes a decisive contribution to integration in Leinfelden-Echterdingen. The container village may soon be history, but the challenges and opportunities that the accommodation of refugees will continue to employ the city in the future.
