Discover the secrets of the Sommerhofenbach in Sindelfingen!

Herrenwäldlestraße 13, 71065 Sindelfingen, Deutschland - In Sindelfingen, an exciting Sunday in the action for water quality determination at the Sommerhofenbach is announced. On July 6th, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., the organizer “Natur.Sindelfingen” (N.E.S.) and the graduate biologist Thomas Peissner invite you to the Bund Umweltzentrum, Herrenwäldertraße 13. Here interested parties can gain a deep insight into the communities of small rivers and explore the water quality themselves.

What can visit visitors? Two exciting research tours are offered at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., in which the participants have the opportunity to catch and observe stream life. In addition, the species is determined to research the water quality, an important aspect, since the water quality varies through factors such as nutrient content, oxygen content and sediment types. A look at the aquarium and under the microscope gives a fascinating insight into the variety of life in the water, while information and small activities related to water are offered.

water quality in focus

The discussion about the water quality is more topical than ever. According to planet-schule.de, the water quality not only varies between different water, but also within a river-from the source to the mouth. Critical factors include nutrient loads and the condition of the soil. For example, muddy ground leads to cloudy water, while gravel enables a clear view of the world below. The communities in and in water play a crucial role: some living things are real "health makers", while others rather contribute to the stress of the water.

The importance of the bank growth must also not be underestimated. It lowers the water temperature and increases the oxygen content, which is vital for many organisms. When considering flowing waters, insect species are often used as bioindicators that provide information about the water quality. These indicators are crucial to correctly assess the water quality, in particular with regard to the Saverprzien index, which is based on biological properties and evaluates the degree of stress of a water.

national efforts and challenges

The EU has been pursuing a uniform protection and usage concept for waters in Europe since 2000, as reported on Environment Bundesamt.de. The objective is clear: a good ecological condition for all natural waters. Nevertheless, the goals of having all rivers in good condition by 2021 were not achieved. Around half of the rivers and streams in Germany are currently considered "significantly changed" or "artificial".

Special attention applies to the most common causes of the grievances: high nutrient loads from agriculture, fine sediment entries and pesticides are always in focus. And the monitoring of the ecological state takes place in the context of six -year management cycles, with the current cycle 2027 ending.

Nevertheless, it can be hoped that events like this can sensitize a broader public and make a contribution to protecting our waters. Admission is free of charge, so that young and old can look forward to an educational experience, just come by is definitely worth it!
