Sonnenkreuzung in Leonberg: Safe conversion for pedestrians and cyclists!

Significant changes are underway in Leonberg that are intended to significantly improve the safety and quality of life of the residents. The Sonnenkreuzung danger point, the central junction between Grabenstrasse, Feuerbacher Strasse and Stuttgarter Strasse, is undergoing a comprehensive redesign. This measure aims to minimize the risks for pedestrians and cyclists and improve orientation for all road users. As the Stuttgarter Nachrichten reports, the current condition of the intersection no longer meets the requirements for safe traffic flow.

Particular attention is paid to the simultaneous switching of traffic lights, which is problematic for those turning left and driving straight ahead. Engineering firm Praxl+Partner has already prepared a feasibility study and examined several options for improving the situation. The decision was made to design the design based on variant 2c, which retains all existing driving relationships. The entire measure is expected to cost around 754,000 euros, with the city hoping for significant funding from state funds.

Implementation of the transformation

The renovation work is planned for the first half of 2026, with the earliest construction start being targeted for September 2026. Mayor Martin Georg Cohn also suggests a visual upgrade of the surface to further increase safety. The failed attempt to acquire the former inn, which remains in existence, presented a challenge. There were also debates about separate cycle lanes and color gradations, which unfortunately were not heard.

But the Sun Crossing is only part of a far-reaching urban development project. As part of the “City for Tomorrow” project, which Cohn has been leading since 2021, the entire city center of Leonberg is being upgraded. The aim is to create more space for cyclists and pedestrians, strengthen local public transport and create new recreational areas. The first renovations are already underway: A section of Poststrasse has been being renovated since September 2025, from which citizens should soon benefit.

Poststrasse was originally intended to be designed as a “shared space”, but due to the current budget situation it remained a classic asphalted commercial street. The work on Poststrasse will continue until mid-December 2025 and further measures on Römerstrasse are already being planned. The widening of the sidewalks, new pedestrian lights and modern bus stops are planned here. The aim is to guide cyclists on the road in the future in order to avoid conflicts with pedestrians.

Outlook on future projects

Neuköllner Platz will also be remodeled as part of the redesign work. Wider sidewalks and more space for restaurants are to be created here. There are also plans to redesign Eltinger Straße, which will lead towards the historic old town, with a project starting in 2029. There will still be a need for clarification about the cycle path routing on Eltinger Straße and the future post office area.

Overall, the city of Leonberg is well on its way to making the city center not only safer, but also more livable. Close collaboration between the city administration, engineers and citizens will be crucial to successfully implement these ambitious plans. It remains to be seen how the projects will develop and what positive influence they will have on the daily lives of Leonberg's citizens.
