Asterix and Obelix: Two special rabbits are urgently looking for a home!

At the Böblingen district animal shelter, two very special creatures are waiting for a new home: the rabbits Asterix and Obelix. These two animal friends were born in 2021 and have special demands on their future owners due to health challenges. According to information from Stuttgarter Nachrichten, they have already undergone the viral infection encephalitozoonosis (EC), which affects their nervous system and eyes. Asterix lost an eye because of this disease. Nevertheless, he copes excellently with everyday life with his remaining eye.

Both rabbits require regular veterinary care because they have dental problems. Their teeth do not grow properly and require frequent grinding so that they can eat without pain. Bianca Heidenreich, the director of the district animal shelter, emphasizes that rabbits with such health challenges often have difficulty finding a new home. But maybe there is someone who can give Asterix and Obelix the chance of a loving home. Anyone interested is invited to contact the district animal shelter by email and provide self-disclosure.

Special needs of Asterix and Obelix

Since Asterix and Obelix have special requirements when it comes to keeping them, they are looking for a nice, large enclosure of at least 3 square meters. It is important that your new owners have experience in keeping rabbits. Ideally, the placement takes place with an existing rabbit or at least as a pair in order to offer them the necessary social interaction. The Böblinger Animal Welfare website makes it clear that dimensions and pictures of the enclosure are also required for the communication.

In addition to Asterix and Obelix, there are other rabbits at the animal shelter who are looking for a loving home. These include Theon and Arya as well as the siblings Wuschel and Rudi. Each of these rabbits has its own character and special characteristics. The siblings Wuschel and Rudi, born in August 2020, are curious and reserved. The different profiles of the animals show how diverse the requirements are for potential owners.

What is Encephalitozoonosis?

Encephalitozoonosis, also known as EC, is caused by the parasite Encephalitozoon cuniculi. It lives in the central nervous system and can cause significant health problems in infected rabbits. According to the information on the rabbit help page, symptoms such as coordination problems, tilted head posture and eye changes are typical signs of an illness. Transmission occurs via spores visible in urine and feces, and there is a risk of infection to other animals, particularly in immunocompromised individuals.

Despite the fact that EC has no cure, progress can be made with appropriate treatment and care. Antiparasitics, antibiotics and supportive therapy measures can help relieve symptoms and improve animal welfare. Species-appropriate husbandry can be crucial in preventing relapses and ensuring the quality of life of the affected rabbits.

For animal-loving people who have a big heart and experience in keeping rabbits, adopting Asterix and Obelix could be a wonderful way to give these two special animals a new life.
