Wind power expansion in Baden-Württemberg: 750 new systems needed by 2030!

Something is happening in the wind power sector and not just in Baden-Württemberg! According to current reports, an increase in the number of newly commissioned wind turbines was recorded across Germany in the first half of 2025. During this period, 378 new wind turbines came online, which is a clear increase compared to 285 new systems in the same period last year. However, the differences between the federal states are clearly noticeable daily news reported.

To date, 13 new wind turbines have been installed in Baden-Württemberg. This brings the total number of wind turbines built in the last 1.5 years to 35. In order to achieve the country's climate goals, the Ministry of the Environment is demanding the construction of an additional 750 wind turbines by 2030. By then, Baden-Württemberg will also need four gigawatts (GW) of wind power output in order to remain sustainable SWR determines.

Number and output of wind turbines

As of September 2023, over 31,000 wind turbines with a nominal output of almost 68,400 megawatts were installed in Germany. In comparison, in September 2018 there were only around 30,200 systems with a nominal output of over 58,800 megawatts. This speaks for a continuing trend towards increasing efficiency through more powerful systems like this Federal Statistical Office reported.

From January to September 2023, wind turbines in Germany fed around 89.9 million megawatt hours of electricity into the grid. This represents a 25 percent increase compared to the same period in 2018, when only 71.7 million megawatt hours were generated. Especially in the winter months, it becomes clear that a lot of electricity from wind power flows into the grid.

Regional differences and challenges

The distribution of wind power expansion between the federal states shows that Baden-Württemberg is in the second row. The frontrunners this year are North Rhine-Westphalia with 108 new wind turbines, followed by Lower Saxony with 89 and Schleswig-Holstein with 61. Expansion in Bavaria, however, is lagging behind; Despite announcements by the Bavarian state government, only six new wind turbines are reported. Criticism of the “10H regulation”, which stipulates a minimum distance from residential development, is constantly increasing, reports daily news.

Whether Baden-Württemberg can achieve the ambitious goals of 750 new wind turbines by 2030 depends on various factors. However, with over 1,000 wind turbines currently in the pipeline, there is a realistic approach to achieving the required output. These systems are already in the planning stage, in the approval process or simply not yet put into operation.
