A comprehensive renovation of the institute building, which is now over 50 years old. With an estimated investment volume of 38 million euros, most of which will be covered by the state, the university not only wants to remedy its structural deficiencies, but above all to create sustainable teaching and work spaces. The institute building was built in 1972 and offered space for 1,800 students. Today, around 2,500 students are enrolled there in 21 courses, which makes the need for renovation all the more urgent. The university's rector emphasizes that a modern campus design is essential to attract future students. During the renovation, the glass facade will remain in place and the surrounding balconies will also be retained, but will be energetically insulated.
New living space for students and innovative approaches
In addition to the renovation of the institute building, another important construction project is being undertaken: the Creative Hall Assisted Living (CHAL). This project aims to improve the quality of life in old age and includes the integration of a student house. The infrastructure company of the Ostalbkreis and the city of Schwäbisch Gmünd are involved in this construction project, with grants of 600,000 euros each. The total investment amounts to 7.5 million euros, of which 750,000 euros have already flowed from the European Regional Development Fund County News reported.
The Creative Hall will house a three-story, barrier-free building that will be equipped with self-sufficient heat supply through heat pumps. The building itself should also receive silver certification according to the Sustainable Building Rating System (BNB). The planning is carried out by a community of architects and engineers and aims to create a space for innovative ideas within an aging society. In addition to a café and an interdenominational room, learning studios will also be integrated to promote learning for students and older citizens alike.
Research and technology in focus
Particularly noteworthy is the focus on the development of digital assistance systems by the Institute of Nursing Science at the university. This integrated approach will support the training of experts who will work in areas such as care, health and social participation. The influence of artificial intelligence in nursing is also being intensively researched here in order to develop solutions that take into account the needs of a diversified society.
