A Jordanian conquers Aalen: Study trip into the future of robotics!
Omar Quasim AL-Maaitah from Jordan is currently enrolled at Aalen University and is studying artificial intelligence and robotics. Inspired by the science fiction series “Westworld,” he developed an interest in these technologies early on. He originally studied mechatronics at the German Jordanian University (GJU) in Mushaquar, where there is a strategic partnership with Aalen University. This collaboration enables GJU students to spend a year in Germany, splitting the time between a German partner university and a company.
AL-Maaitah particularly appreciates the modern laboratories and the excellent infrastructure at Aalen University. His commitment to technological innovation has been evident since his youth, when at the age of twelve he developed a “smart window” to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning in Jordanian households. In addition to his experiences, he invites the citizens of Aalen to spend a semester abroad in Jordan and get to know the cultural and natural sights.
Innovative projects in robotics
Aalen University is also a place where exciting projects are developed. These include, among other things, initiatives in the field of welding technology that were created in cooperation with Hema Electronic and Pawlowski. Manual welding is common in many medium-sized companies, but the shortage of skilled workers and increasing demands for efficiency pose a challenge. In this context, an AI-supported, automated welding system is being developed, which is supported by the state of Baden-Württemberg. The aim is to continuously improve the weld seam quality in the TIG process while at the same time minimizing the programming effort.
These advances are not only interesting from a technological point of view. Aalen University, under the leadership of specialists such as Dr. Wolfgang Rimkus and Prof. Markus Merkel, plays a key role in developing the AI algorithms and simulation techniques necessary for the project. The advantage of this is the use of digital twins, which support a smooth process and the identification of possible sources of error. In addition, intelligent cameras are used that correct the distance between the torch head and the workpiece in real time to guarantee consistent quality.
New training opportunities
Another exciting area at Aalen University is training in robotics and automation technology. From the winter semester of 2021/22, a new master's degree program will be offered that will provide students with important knowledge in robotics and artificial intelligence. The focus is on topics such as programmed robot simulations, robot logistics and collaboration between robots and AI methods.
This course takes place on the modern Linder Technology Campus (LTC) in Karlsruhe, where students are also given contact with local companies and startups. It's a great opportunity to experience digital transformation in production up close and work with innovative technologies. Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences shows how important interdisciplinary approaches are to meet the challenges of modern industry.
AL-Maaitah and the projects at Aalen University exemplify the exciting change that is taking place in the world of technology and applied sciences. The exchange between cultures and the advancement of technologies are more interconnected than ever, and that's a good thing.
