Heidenheim Opera Festival: A bang between Puccini and Strauss!

The Heidenheim Opera Festival is in full swing and has some exciting premieres in store. On July 8, 2025, two masterpieces are on the program: Giacomo Puccini’s “Gianni Schicchi” and Richard Strauss’ “Elektra”. This combination promises a captivating evening, which will be celebrated at two different venues: “Gianni Schicchi” in the impressive Congress Centrum festival hall and “Elektra” in the picturesque Knights’ Hall of Hellenstein Castle. A short walk of around 400 meters, which takes around seven minutes, separates the two locations. A shuttle service is also available to visitors to make the change as relaxed as possible, emphasizes schwaebische.de.

“Gianni Schicchi” delights with a humorous plot that revolves around the rich Buoso Donati, whose will causes excitement among his relatives. She is determined to deprive the dead man of his inheritance, while Gianni Schicchi, played brilliantly by Rory Musgrave, turns the situation in his favor. The talented Ava Dodd as Lauretta and Thomas Gahzeli as Donati's cousin also contribute to the lively performance. The Stuttgart Philharmonic, under the direction of Marcus Bosch, completes the picture with their musical accompaniment.

A dramatic duel

After a 45-minute break, the audience is captivated by the tragedy “Elektra”. This opera is based on a libretto by Hugo von Hofmannsthal and illuminates the dark family history of the children Elektra, Chrysothemis and Orest, who long for revenge after the murder of their father Agamemnon by Clytemnestra and Aegisthus. Christiane Libor shines in the title role and shows both acting and vocal strength. Katerina Hebelková also stars as Klytämnestra and Tineke van Ingelgem as Chrysothemis. The production takes advantage of the breathtaking open-air ambience of the Knight's Hall, which makes the experience even more intense. What is surprising is the new ending, which offers Elektra the chance of survival in this production, which provides a breath of fresh air swr.de highlights.
