An act of faith
In Catholic teaching, the Eucharist is viewed as the source and culmination of Christian life. The discussion about bread and wine shows how fundamental and at the same time challenging faith can be. While Martin Luther doubted the Catholic view in the 15th century, the Catholic understanding remains: communion with Christ becomes a central experience in the transformed bread and wine.
For many children, this first communion is not only a religious celebration, but also strengthens their belonging to the religious community to a certain extent. The solemn togetherness and the anticipation of the ceremony are palpable and contribute to the feeling of community that will accompany these young people on their further journey of faith.
