Kamishibai event in Schwetzingen: Scary stories for kids!
An exciting event for the little ones is planned in Schwetzingen on November 6th: the Kamishibai – Japanese narrative theater in the city library. The event starts at 4:30 p.m. and is aimed at children aged four and over. The famous story “The Little Ghost” by Otfried Preußler is shown, which is ideal for stimulating the imagination of young listeners. The performance lasts about 30 minutes and admission is free. Anyone who would like to take part can register by phone at 06202/87 271 or by email at stadtbibliothek(at)nospamschwetzingen.de to secure a place.
Kamishibai, which originated in the Shitamachi area of Tokyo and emerged around 1930, is not only an exciting form of entertainment but also a significant cultural phenomenon. It has its roots in the traditional Japanese storytelling art “etoki,” which dates back to the 12th century. This visual storytelling was particularly popular during the Edo period. The street artists use images and sound to bring stories to life, reaching an audience of up to one million children in Tokyo. In times of crisis, such as the Great Depression, kamishibai thrived and provided jobs for many people.
Kamishibai – More than just entertainment
The Kamishibai is designed with a wooden box, illustrated cards and the storyteller's voice. This impressive performance brings not only old but also modern stories to the stage. Since the 1990s, this art form has gained increasing recognition not only in Japan, but also in other countries such as Laos and Vietnam. The local storyteller creates his own performances to bring both traditional and new stories to a wide audience, promoting intercultural exchange.
In addition, Kamishibai is also used in various social areas. International organizations use it, for example, to provide information about health issues. This type of visual and human-centered communication is particularly effective at overcoming language barriers.
