District of Esslingen: fiber optic expansion continues to progress only slowly!
In the Esslingen district, there is a lot going on when it comes to fiber optic expansion, but progress is anything but satisfactory. The expansion of fiber optic lines progresses more slowly than originally planned. As the Esslinger Zeitung reports, the goal is to reach a supply rate of 50% of private households by the end of 2023. Markus Grupp, Managing Director of the Broadband Supply district of Esslingen, leaves no doubt that there is still a lot of air upwards.
Since 2019, the special -purpose association has been working on the broadband infrastructure for the 44 member communities. It is currently aimed at reaching a cover of 90% by 2030. However, those responsible face some challenges that slow the progress. This includes a deteriorated market dynamics, falling investments due to rising interest rates and construction costs as well as limited construction capacities and in short supply of good building quality.
stagnation through bankruptcy and disinterest
One of the greatest hurdles is the lack of interest of the population in ultra -fast internet. This means that many households are not willing to invest in a quick connection. In addition, six municipalities have to deal with the consequences of the bankruptcy of the Liberty Network and its subsidiary Hello Fiber. Six other municipalities are waiting for the promised expansion by other telecommunications companies, which puts the patience of citizens to the test.
According to the report, a total of 87,749 fiber optic connections were created by the end of 2022, which corresponds to 16,849 more than at the end of 2021. However, the current supply of 32.1% is significantly below the average of the Stuttgart region, which is 40.4%.
Current construction sites and projects
Deutsche Telekom plays a central role in the expansion work, other companies such as the German fiber and Netcom BW are active. Construction projects are currently taking place in Dettingen, Ohmden and Owen. Unfortunately there were also setbacks: In Altbach and Deizisau, the work had to be stopped due to problems with the executing companies, a sequel is expected in autumn 2025.
Another downside: The planned expansion of the GVG in Aichtal, Neckartailfingen and Schlaitdorf was put on ice. The solution for the expansion in these areas is currently being developed with Netcom BW, but exactly when the starting shot will be given remains to be seen.
The big picture in the Esslingen district
Despite the challenges, the district of Esslingen remains an economically strong heart as part of Baden-Württemberg. Over 530,000 people live here, surrounded by impressive nature and provides an excellent connection to the road and rail network. This makes the district an attractive goal for those seeking relaxation and at the same time offers a fixed economic foundation. Many of the medium -sized companies based here are also internationally successful.
The combination of a rich cultural life, a variety of schools, universities and the new Stuttgart Airport makes the Esslingen district a particularly livable place. However, so that the quality of life is preserved, fast internet access, as has long been standard in other parts of the region, is indispensable. It remains to be hoped that those responsible will take the necessary steps to reach the fiber optic goals promptly before other regions continue to catch up.
