Kirchheim is making progress: accessibility for all citizens!

In Kirchheim unter Teck, a lot has happened in recent years to improve accessibility in the city. The inclusion plan, which was launched in 2021, is now being implemented and developed step by step. Central attention is on mobility and public space. As reported Kirchheim-Teck.de, four public city tours have already taken place to identify barriers and to discuss solutions. These tours were organized under the direction of the inclusion officer Karoline Brüstle and extended over important routes in the city, including the path from the train station to the city center and the Hindenburgstrasse.

The inclusion plan was developed with a lot of commitment by citizens with and without disabilities, with ideas and needs from various workshops being collected. The city administration, local companies and self -help groups were actively involved. This participative approach aims to sustainably improve the social participation of people with impairments, as [Stadtberatung.info] (https://www.stadtberatung.info/projekte/kirchheim- Inclusion Plan/).

The city tours - a look at barriers

In particular, attention was paid to the quality of the footpaths, the design of the curbs, traffic lights as well as the illumination and shading. Other central topics were seating, toilets and the use of local public transport. The aim is not only to identify the barriers, but also to develop concrete suggestions for improvement. Particularly gratifying: measures already implemented include the conversion of the Konrad-Widerholt school for barrier-free access and the construction of two barrier-free toilets at the train stations in Kirchheim and Ötlingen.

The conversion of 19 bus stops is also particularly worth mentioning, which are now also accessible. Twelve more stops are to follow. The planning of a new administrative building at Marktstraße 1-3 has also taken into account accessibility right from the start. The city wants to not only raise awareness among the citizens, but also show the importance of accessibility to the local council.

a national context

Around 13 million people live with impairments all over Germany, and many of them are fighting against physical and social barriers every day. These barriers often not only limit people with handicaps, but also older people, families with small children or those with little knowledge of German. In its coalition agreement, the federal government has stipulated that accessibility extensively promotes. With the Federal Initiative Barrier Freedom, the reduction of barriers should be pursued intensively in both public and private sectors.

The initiative includes several priorities, including barrier -free mobility, barrier -free housing construction and digitization. It turns out that the efforts to access accessibility not only appeal to a certain group of people, but also benefit the entire society.

The city of Kirchheim unter Teck has made a lot of big work. The next public city tours for accessibility are planned for 2026, and it remains to be seen which progress can be made.
