Train chaos: Children play on the tracks and stop 32 trains in Grabow!
A dangerous game between tracks caused massive train delays on the Hamburg-Berlin route on Saturday evening. Local authorities report an incident in which two girls aged 12 and 14 were playing on the tracks near Grabow, in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district. Luckily, the driver of a freight train became aware of the dangers and stopped his train in time, which prevented anything worse from happening. The girls were found unharmed by the state police and handed over to the federal police. This incident led to a closure of the railway line, which lasted about 50 minutes and sent a total of 32 trains on their journey with a delay of a total of 1178 minutes, as pz-news.de and Tagesspiegel report.
The federal police took this incident as an opportunity to urgently warn about the extreme dangers of gambling on and on railway lines. Trains travel at high speeds, are extremely quiet and are therefore often not noticed until late. The passing trains can also create a dangerous suction effect, which can lead to serious accidents. A message that is often underestimated, especially among young people.
Accident prevention for children
In order to better communicate the dangers on tracks and railway systems, Deutsche Bahn has developed various accident prevention materials in collaboration with the Federal Police. These are aimed particularly at children of preschool and primary school age and teach the correct behavior on platforms, tracks and crossings in a playful way. The “Safe on the Road with Oli” prevention package includes teaching materials, videos and stickers and is optimized for lessons. An animated film entitled “Oli's Chance”, which highlights the correct behavior on railway systems, was even awarded as the best children's film at the International Animated Film Festival in 2006, as deutschebahn.com informs.
A recent prevention spot particularly highlights the dangers of dangerous behavior on tracks. Young people often tend to underestimate risks, whether it's spraying graffiti, taking shortcuts across tracks or climbing freight trains. Deutsche Bahn is therefore relying on a strong information campaign, both online and on social media, to raise awareness of the dangers. With several videos showing the risks, an attempt is made to consciously counteract dangerous trends such as taking photos on the track bed.
