Dangers of the dead angle: students experience security up close!
At the Hans-Thoma-Gymnasium (HTG) in Lörrach, an exciting project for traffic safety was recently started, which particularly addressed the dangers of the dead angle. Thanks to the generous support from the local company Streck, the pupils of the fifth and seventh grades were able to experience directly on the day of class how important it is to pay attention to this often overlooked aspect in road traffic. The company not only provided a truck, but also an experienced driver, Mohammed Mabrouki, who, with great commitment, brought the visibility and dangers of the dead angle closer to the students.
The special thing: The students had the opportunity to take a seat in the driver's seat themselves. This not only gave them a unique insight into the perspective of a truck driver, but also illustrated how quickly and unnoticed accidents can happen. With this interactive approach, awareness of traffic safety is sharpened, which is of central importance not only for children and adolescents, but for all road users.
The dead angle in the focus
The campaign is part of a broader initiative that is carried out in schools, kindergartens and associations. With similar programs, the Swiss Commercial Vehicle Association of ASTAG is committed to clarifying children and adolescents about the dangers in road traffic at an early stage. These actions also include informative workshops and training in order to deepen the understanding of the dead corner and to minimize the risk of traffic accidents. The responsible persons firmly believe that sensitization and education are the keys to a safe traffic environment, as well as deadwinkel.ch emphasized.
The challenges of dead angles should not be underestimated. Serious accidents can occur in particular on intersections and when turning if other road users are not perceived in the dead angle of a vehicle. The ADAC program for secondary level I aims to sensitize and address these dangers. In their teaching units, the teachers offer the students the opportunity to establish direct contact with a truck and thus to find out up close where the blind spots of a vehicle are exactly.
interactive learning methods
For teachers who want to integrate the topic of "dead angle" into their lessons, the ADAC also offers support in the form of materials. This includes a 9-page PowerPoint presentation, accompanying task sheets and the film "The real life without filters-the dead angle". These aids serve not only to clarify, but also the active participation of the students in the learning process in order to increase the understanding of the dangers in road traffic. Informative workshops and the possibility to request for teaching units are also part of the concept, as is explained on Mobilitaet-unchtung.de
Thanks to such projects as at the Hans Thoma Gymnasium, it becomes clear to a wider audience how important traffic safety is and that you have to be sensitized from an early age. With a good hand for clarification, we can contribute together to make the streets safer.
