100 years of DLRG: Lifeguard on Lake Constance celebrate big anniversary break!

100 years ago, the German Lebens-Rettungsgesellschaft (DLRG) was founded, and since then the world of water rescue has changed significantly. Here on Lake Constance, the local DLRG has continued to develop in the Bodensee Constance district, but the main goal remains unchanged: to save human life. A group of committed swimmers also helped to pull people from the floods in need, long before today's modern aids such as boats or radio devices were available. Südkurier today that the DLRG reports today The largest swimming training organization is on Lake Constance and the vision is pursued that every child can swim.

The anniversary is duly celebrated: On June 28, 2025, a big festival takes place in the seaside resort of Radolfzell, which also includes a lecture on the history of the DLRG on Lake Constance. In Radolfzell there is the most modern guards on the lake, which offers the ideal framework for these celebrations. The event begins at 1:30 p.m. with various presentations, including the unusual rescue equipment such as a modern lifeboat and innovative drheal technology. There is a bouncy castle for the little guests, and the physical well -being is also well taken care of.

The current situation of drowning cases

The work of the DLRG remains all the more important because the number of drowning cases in Germany has increased alarming in recent years. According to the DLRG, there has been a continued increase in fatal accidents in waters since 2021, with 411 drowned people in 2023. This number means an increase of 31 deaths compared to the previous year. dlrg President Ute Vogt emphasizes the need to sensitize parents of small children to special dangers, especially with the approaching summer, which pulls many people to the waters.

The DLRG has successfully contributed to reducing the number of drowning cases significantly. Since its foundation in 1913, inspired by an accident that cost 16 people, the organization has become the largest voluntary water rescue organization in the world. In the first 100 years, the DLRG saved over 66,000 people and was able to reduce the drowning rate by 92%. But the challenge remains: In 2022, 836 people drowned, the highest number since 1983, and forecasts for 2024 again expect over 400 victims. This shows that the DLRG must always be on the hat. NDR provides further insights into the eventful history and the challenges of these important institution.

With a dedicated team of around 4,195 members across Baden-Württemberg and a strong community of around 627,000 throughout Germany, the DLRG is ready to ensure security in our waters in the future. The local group in Radolfzell, which was launched in 1951 and today counts 430 members, is a bright example of how volunteering can save life. It is celebrated on June 28th, but the seriousness of the situation remains present, because there is still a lot to be due to the DLRG and its tireless work.
