Freiburg protects Christmas market with mobile access barriers!
The Christmas market in Freiburg is facing an important innovation that puts the safety of visitors as the top priority. How SWR reports, the city of Freiburg, the police and Freiburg Wirtschaft Touristik und Messe GmbH & Co. KG (FWTM) have developed a comprehensive security concept. New to the concept are mobile access barriers of the “Armis One” type, which are intended to act as protection against possible terrorist attacks and rampages.
What kind of barriers are these? These innovative modules weigh 770 kilos each and have a price of 16,000 euros each. They are able to bring heavy vehicles to a stop in a very short time. Around 20 of these mobile barriers will be set up during the Christmas market and they will be raised from 11am. In exceptional cases, residents and delivery traffic can pass through the barriers if they contact FWTM beforehand.
Security precautions and visitor numbers
At the last edition of the Christmas market there were 32 recorded crimes, with the majority being pickpocketing. However, there is currently no evidence of an imminent risk of attack in Freiburg. The police will accompany the market daily, supported on weekends by colleagues from France and Switzerland. In addition, a security service and the municipal enforcement service will provide additional security.
Particular attention is also paid to the flow of visitors. A detailed counting system allows crowds to be monitored and redirected if necessary. Special precautionary measures such as a ban on weapons and knives should also contribute to safety. In the event of an emergency, a loudspeaker system informs everyone present at the same time.
Freiburg Christmas market in the splendor of Advent lights
The Christmas market opens its doors on November 20th at 2 p.m. and the traditional celebration will be celebrated with the gingerbread cutting at 7 p.m. on the town hall square. The market extends across several locations in Freiburg city center and offers 127 stalls spread across eight locations. On Advent Sundays, the offering will be expanded to include 19 additional stands on Kaiser-Joseph-Straße.
While Christmas markets are in full swing in many German cities, with charming offerings from traditional mulled wine to handmade gifts, Freiburg's market remains a special place for encounters and enjoyment. While the numerous Christmas markets in Munich are buzzing until the end of December, Freiburg's Christmas market is a tranquil option for enjoying Advent in the city. The Christmas market in Munich, the traditional Christkindlmarkt at Marienplatz, for example, runs from November 24th to December 24th and is extremely popular with its historical roots and numerous attractions in front of the impressive backdrop of the town hall, according to information from munich.travel.
It will be exciting to see how the Freiburg Christmas market is perceived this season and whether the new safety measures will play their part in ensuring that it is a safe and happy celebration for everyone!
