Barber Angels bring hope: free haircuts in Greece!
There is news from Greece that touches the heart! Claus Niedermaier, the newly qualified master hairdresser and founder of the Barber Angels Brotherhood, set out with four other members to do something good for those in need. The group traveled to Thessaloniki and Kavala, where they offered free haircuts to give back some quality of life to those in need.
The Barber Angels were founded in Biberach in 2016 and have since developed into an international network that now includes around 900 hairdressers worldwide. With their missions they want to support people who are often on the margins of society. Greece is now the twelfth country in which the Barber Angels are active - proof of the impressive spread of this social initiative.
An emotional mission in Greece
During the first operation, over 50 needy people came to Thessaloniki to have their hair cut. The hairdressers were accompanied by the mayor and media representatives who underlined the importance of this campaign. Also in Kavala, the hometown of Antroniki Prasidou, a local hairdresser who supported the founding of the new chapter, 100 people in need were invited, of whom around 80 showed up. The reactions were consistently emotional: hugs, tears and small gifts showed how much people appreciated the sensitive effort.
The initiative not only generated great interest among those in need, but also attracted numerous local hairdressers. Around 40 Greek hairdressers have already indicated that they would like to work. Another mission in Athens is being planned, which should take place before August.
Strengthening self-esteem
What is the secret behind the success of the Barber Angels? In addition to haircuts, the hairdressers also offer an open ear to their customers' concerns. These small gestures can make a big difference for many, boosting self-confidence and improving opportunities in the housing or job market. A professional haircut can work wonders and give people a new sense of dignity and self-worth.
In Germany, especially in Berlin, Björn Mentler coordinates the operations of 19 Barber Angels, who regularly come to disadvantaged neighborhoods in collaboration with organizations such as Caritas, Diakonie and Bahnhofsmissionen. They not only bring their own hair cutting utensils, but also care products such as shampoo and combs, which are thanks to the support of the Berlin Sparkasse be made available. This support helps to cover ongoing costs and secure the need for hygiene and care products.
A campaign like that of the Barber Angels does not only rely on donations, but is based entirely on voluntary commitment. The first missions in Greece showed how strong this initiative is and how much good you can do if you are willing to take a step to help. With his deployment plans for Italy and France, Niedermaier wants to further expand the reach of the Barber Angels. Who knows, maybe there will soon be free haircuts there for those who need it most.
