Dispute over Brenzbahn: Heidenheim is urging Alb-Donau on planning costs!

Alb-Donau-Kreis, Deutschland - In Baden-Württemberg, the expansion of the Brenzbahn between Heidenheim and Ulm is currently causing a good ignition material. The dispute between the districts of Heidenheim and Alb-Donau is becoming increasingly hot. According to SWR POLTA from Heidenheim has set an ultimate to the planning costs to participate. This ultimatum was until June 10th and was not met, which further complicated the situation.

Heidenheim sees a "historical opportunity" in the expansion of the Brenzbahn. The district expects the new connection to create an hourly express connection and a half -hourly cycle between Heidenheim and Aalen. This would not only promote the mobility of the citizens, but also improve the economic framework in the region. The Alb-Donau district, on the other hand, sees the benefit of the expansion skeptically, since only a small section of the Brenzbahn runs through its area. However, a solidarity contribution of 667,000 euros for the planning costs has already been assured, but the total investment of around 594 million euros remains controversial.

Financial support from the state

However, the financial framework conditions seem better than ever. Baden-Württemberg has increased the funding amount for the expansion and electrification of the Brenzbahn, such as Landkreis-heidenheim.de reported. Overall, a total cost of over 1.2 billion euros for the expansion of the Brenzbahn and the Lake Constance Red Railway is assumed. The country assumes 50 percent of the costs that are funded according to the municipal transport law (GVFG). Particularly gratifying: half of the planning costs for the Brenzbahn, which amount to around 32 million euros, are pre -financed.

Transport Minister Winfried Hermann emphasized that the Brenzbahn is not endangered, even if the Alb-Donau district does not fully participate in the planning costs. This gives the participants the hope that the conflict can be solved sooner or later. Despite the differences, both counties seem to be ready to find a common path to secure mobility in the region in the long term.

perspectives for the future

The Brenzbahn is considered an important traffic route that connects Ulm and Aalen and is of great importance for the East Württemberg and the Danube-Eller region. The joint declaration of intent of the counties for the expansion of the Brenzbahn has existed since the end of 2020. Future studies that are funded by the Ministry of Transport should now take the next steps in the planning. These can help to check the reactivation of potentially sensible routes in the region and to ensure the financing, such as Baden-württemberg.de

At its core, everything revolves around one question: How can the optimal traffic concept be designed for the entire region? In view of the upcoming challenges, it remains to be seen how the dialogue between the counties continues and whether it will be possible to combine the different points of view.
