Wine tenth from Kirrweiler: Traditionally via tractor and horse to Speyer!
Kirrweiler, Deutschland - On June 27th there will be a very special ceremony in Speyer: the wine release from the episcopal vineyard in Kirrweiler is again on the program. The wine tenth, a tradition that was revived in 2011, brings the estimated fruits of the wine harvest to Speyer again this year. The Kirrweiler Delegation will bring the wine with a tractor and even on the last few meters with a horse -drawn trailer to the cathedral, where the handover at 2:30 p.m. to Bishop Dr. Karl-Heinz Wiesemann and Auxiliary Bishop Otto Georgenens will take place. The last levy included around 260 bottles of the Grauburgunder, with 264 bottles being handed over in 2024. This levy is part of a long tradition that goes back to the time when Kirrweiler was the summer residence of the Speyer Church princes, and formerly took place in the prince -bishop's tenth cellar before it was set with secularization 200 years ago.
The wine tenth has now established itself in the region. The presentation of the wine is not only a custom, but also a gift from the municipality of Kirrweiler to the Speyer bishops - for the 15th time. Mayor Rolf Metzger and the Kirrweiler delegation benefit from the historical connections between Kirrweiler and Speyer. Last but not least, these relationships were visible in 2018 during the eighth wine tenth on the cathedral square, where Metzger asked the bishops to hold a trade fair in Kirrweiler, which was promised by Bischof Wiesemann, provided that everyone present is also present.
The meaning of the wine
The wine plays a central role in the biblical tradition, which Pastor Peter Nirmaier emphasized. As part of the celebrations, art will not be neglected; "Woibischof" Georgen is entertained the audience with his poems. The Kirrweiler Wine, a 2017 Grauburgunder Classic from the Ralph Anton wine house, is offered to the guests for tasting. This promotes the exchange between visitors and the Kirrweiler delegation and enriches cultural experience.
Kirrweiler, which was once a senior office and summer residence of the Prince -Bishops of the Diocese of Speyer, also developed an interesting wine culture in modern times. The challenge of climate change affects wine production in the region, as not only the wineries in Speyer show, but also the episcopal wineries in Trier. There the wine makers have adapted their growing methods to cope with the effects of late frosts and drought and thus keep the quality of the wines high. Despite the difficulties, the wine consumption remains stable
Thanks to the return to old traditions and the role of wine in the community, the wine tenth remains a highlight in the regional event calendar and once more offers the opportunity to combine historical roots with the present. It will be interesting to see what surprises the upcoming wine tenth will bring - both in Speyer and in the heart of the citizens of Kirrweiler.
