Heidelberg improves cycling and school routes: More security for everyone!

Something is happening in Heidelberg: Since June 12, 2025, the Friedrich Ebert facility has been upgraded with new measures that benefit both cyclists and pedestrians. The city pursues the goal of increasing traffic safety and developing this important east-west connection for cycling and foot traffic. From now on, it will be more convenient and safer on their way to school, especially for the pupils of the nearby Hölderlin high school.

The focus of the improvements is the section between Schäßorstraße and Märzgasse. Here the Friedrich Ebert-based system will be accessible in the future. In order to identify the single -lane more clearly and avoid violations of the rules, new traffic islands are planned on both sides of the road. At the same time, a bicycle parking system, which reduces the road width by 1.80 meters, is set up on the road between Marchgasse and Sofienstraße. The sidewalk remains free for pedestrians, which is a significant relief, since they were often blocked by parked bikes.

prepared for changes

The city of Heidelberg has been continuously investing in the improvement of the cycling infrastructure along the Friedrich-Ebert-based system since 2018. In 2021, independent cycling lanes were already marked, which run between Adenauerplatz, Friedrich-Ebert-Platz and Nadlerstrasse. These measures not only increase security, but also the comfort of the connection between the old town and the main train station and relieve the PLÖCK. According to the [ADFC] (https://www.adfc.de/artikel/adfc-leitlinien-zur-zur-bike traffic infrastructure), it is crucial that the bicycle traffic infrastructure is intuitive and attractive for all cyclists-regardless of age or skills. The Heidelberg measures are therefore in line with these modern requirements.

In addition, space for residents along the street is temporarily set up for cars for the creation of new parking spaces for cars until the new fire station of the old town volunteer fire brigade is completed. Mobile bicycle stands in the area of the craftsman parking spaces are removed to create space for residents.

a piece of history

The Friedrich Ebert-based system also has a rich history. Originally known as Leopoldstrasse, it was a popular address in the 19th century, especially for professors, including the important mathematician Leo Koenigsberger, who lived here several times. The Friedrich-Ebert-based system not only makes this historical connection an important traffic artery, but also part of Heidelberg's cultural heritage. Information about this development is comprehensively documented in Histmath-heidelberg.de.

The current measures to improve the cycle and school route in the Friedrich Ebert facility are part of the Heidelberg bike offensive and the new bike strategy 2030. A long-term goal is to make cycling in the city as attractive and secure as possible in order to bring even more people on the bike. Because as the ADFC emphasizes, it is important that there is enough space for all cyclists to guarantee security and comfort.

Heidelberg takes an important step into the future. The residents and cyclists can look forward to more security and an improved infrastructure. And who knows, maybe one day this road will be even more than just a transit area - it could become a place of encounter and life.
