Big closing party in the Ethnological Museum: Celebrate the future with us!

What’s on the agenda for Heidelberg? On July 31, 2025, the “City in the Middle” in the Ethnological Museum will be the scene of a happy closing party. From 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Hauptstrasse 235, visitors can look forward to an entertaining celebration. The occasion is the completion of funding for the “Mittendrinnenstadt” program by the federal program “Sustainable Inner Cities and Centers”. A reason to celebrate together!

Under the motto "In the middle of the city party and you're there! Three years of much more city center - a reason to celebrate!" The organizers have put together a varied program. The highlight will be a leisurely walk through the “City in the Middle” in the garden of the museum, where the implementation of various measures will be presented. There are also project stations that provide an insight into the changes and a guest wall that invites you to leave personal memories and wishes for the city center of the future.

A colorful festival with musical sounds

The event will be ceremonially opened by First Mayor Jürgen Odszuck at 5:30 p.m. DJ sounds provide the musical accompaniment, while deck chairs and refreshing drinks invite you to linger. The best part? There is no need to register, so anyone can just show up and join in the celebration. If you would like more information, you can find it online at www.vielmehr.heidelberg.de/mittendrinnenstadt.

But why are such events important? The trend towards urbanization plays a central role in urban development. According to the BNE portal, more than half of the world's population already lives in cities, and this number is expected to rise to 60% by 2030. While cities offer access to numerous benefits such as shopping and cultural offerings, urbanization also brings challenges. Rising rental prices and displacement are some of them.

Sustainability in focus

In order to continue to create livable inner cities in the future, concepts for sustainable urban development must increasingly come to the fore. In Germany, numerous cities are working on implementing the “New Urban Agenda”, which was decided at the HABITAT III world summit in Quito. This agenda lays the foundation for the sustainable development of urban spaces.

In Heidelberg, the “Mittendrinnenstadt” program shows how sustainable urban planning can work. It is no secret that citizen participation is crucial to the success of such initiatives. Education for sustainable development, as promoted by UNESCO, helps develop skills that can advance not only the local community, but also the city itself.

Inspire by these examples of cooperation and creativity, Heidelberg invites all citizens to actively participate in shaping their city and not to miss the celebrations on July 31st. Because urban development is not just a bureaucratic process, but a living experience that affects us all.

Overall, events like the closing party are not just celebrations, but also opportunities to raise awareness of the importance of sustainable urban development. One thing is clear: a sustainable city center needs committed citizens and innovative ideas. And who knows? Perhaps the “City in the Middle” will bring even more creative solutions to the challenges that lie ahead of us.
