Stuttgart sets standards: more electric cars approved as a combustion engine!

Stuttgart, Deutschland - In a pioneering development for the automotive industry in Stuttgart, electric cars in the city took the lead for new registrations for the first time. By the end of May 2023, more fully electric vehicles were approved than diesel or gasoline vehicles. Since then, the city has recorded 3534 electric cars, which increases its share in the new registrations to a considerable 20.9 percent, while diesel cars only make up 20.8 percent (3506 cars). This reports Elektroauto-News .

It is particularly positive that in addition to the fully electric cars, 2998 plug-in hybrids and 4396 hybrids in Stuttgart were also re-registered. Overall, alternative drives in the state capital make up for impressive 64.7 percent of new registrations. Martin Körner, director of the Stuttgart fundamental department for climate protection, mobility and living, emphasizes that the increasing number of attractive models and the improved public charging infrastructure are two essential factors for the boom in electric cars.

strong support program for charging infrastructure

The public charging infrastructure in Stuttgart is one of the most densely in Germany. There are currently 3572 charging points, and the city plans to add 500 other charging stations in the coming years to further promote mobility. Climate protection is of great importance for Stuttgart, since around 14 percent of CO₂ emissions come from urban traffic. The city is aiming for climate neutrality by 2035. This is also evident in the political and industrial orientation, which relies on the switching of combustion engines to electric motors. According to Statista from 2035 in the EU will no longer be allowed to re-allow petrol and diesel cars, whereby the goal for Germany will be aimed at 15 million electric cars.

The positive trend at electric cars in Stuttgart is reflected in the Germany -wide numbers. At the end of 2022, the number of fully electric cars in Germany crossed the million border, and around 1.4 million electric cars were already on the roads in early 2024. Between 2024 and 2030 it is expected that almost 2 million electric cars have to be re-registered annually in order to achieve the ambitious goal.

manufacturer react to inquiries

The automobile manufacturers have recognized the signs of the times. In 2023, Volkswagen became the best-selling brand in the e-car segment, with over 70,600 new registrations, and the Tesla Model Y was the most popular electric car, even if the paragraph decreased by almost 9 percent. Since many consumers still have concerns about the high acquisition costs and the range, buy bonuses from the federal government and manufacturers are an important incentive. In this way, buyers of a battery electric vehicle receive grants of up to 7,500 euros, depending on the netist price.

The electric cars produced cause higher greenhouse gas emissions, especially due to the batteries, but in the long term an emission -free journey is sought as soon as the electricity comes from renewable energies. In 2023, over 54 percent of the electricity produced already came from such sources, which the engines of the future should be all the more.

The signs are still on change: If the cities further expand their charging infrastructure and the citizens opt for electric vehicles more, Stuttgart could soon be at the forefront - not only in Germany, but also at European level. It remains exciting to see how this trend will develop.
