Stuttgart in the upswing: City dialog for Lower Königstrasse!
Stuttgart, Deutschland - The future of Stuttgart takes shape: On July 17, 2025, around 30 representatives from administration, business and interest associations met in the town hall to discuss the challenges and opportunities of the city center at the eighth city dialog. The focus of the talks was the will for active design, as the new head of business development, Torsten von Appen, impressively expressed. "We not only want to observe, we want to tackle and develop together," said von Appen.
A central topic was the lower Königstrasse, which is to be cleaned in the evening by an initiative of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK). This measure is seen as a strong signal of connection with the location. The city administration also sees the quality of the city center as extremely important for the well -being of the citizens. Holger Siegle, City Manager of the City Initiative Stuttgart, emphasized the importance of the cooperation of all actors.
Stuttgart award and visitor number
does Stuttgart bring a breath of fresh air to the city center? Definitely, because the city was recently awarded the Vital City Award 2024 and can describe itself as the "most vital city center" among major German cities. This recognition is not only a reason to celebrate, but also shows the great encouragement of over 21 million visitors who populated the streets of the city center in 2024. According to an analysis of the start-up Hystreet.com in cooperation with the Institute for Commercial Research (IFH) Cologne, Stuttgart achieves the top position among large cities with more than 600,000 inhabitants with a vitality index of over 33.
“This is a sign of the city's attraction," said Mayor Dr. Frank Nopper. He pointed out the factors that contribute to the attractiveness of the city center: excellent pedestrian friendliness, good connection to public transport and a wide range of events, catering and retail. The visitor's feeling of security is also very pronounced.
on the way to a living city center
"Each of us contributes to the atmospheric and cultural diversity," emphasizes Von Appen, who highlights the active role of the different companies and actors. These committed partners not only take care of the cleanliness, but also to design an attractive cityscape. The discussions in the city dialog already provided results such as the City Innovation Lab and the development of VfB's Popup Store in Königsbau.
Another project that should delight the citizens is the planned redesign of the Stuttgart marketplace, which will accommodate a house of tourism and several catering offers in the future. There are also plans for the lower Königstrasse to improve the quality of stay by green and blue elements. These topics will be taken up on November 10th in another city dialogue with experts from urban planning.
So it remains exciting in Stuttgart! While the discussion about the city center progresses, it is unequivocally showing: the city lives and is controlled with skill and creativity into the future.
