The goal? A drastic reduction in the number of cars on the popular holiday island. In 2023, around 400,000 cars came to Mallorca with ferries, 71 percent of which belong to vacationers and secondary owners who have no main residence on the island. The public consultation for the draft law begins after the introduction and is intended to give the other parties of the island council the opportunity to put up ideas and objections. After the consultation, the proposal is presented to the island parliament for coordination. The innovation could come into force at the earliest in the next year, whereby a specific upper limit for the number of vehicles that are approved in Mallorca - especially for rental car fleets can be expected.

The Mallorca Island Council pursues goals with this legal initiative based on a comprehensive traffic study from last summer. This study has shown that up to 1.3 million trips on the streets of Mallorca will be counted on peak days in August, including up to 75,000 rental cars. Traffic planners indicate that between 90,000 and 120,000 vehicles are considered too much in the high season.
