Protection for pasture animals: Free seminar against wolf attacks!
In the Swabian-Franconian Forest, there will soon be an exciting seminar that deals with the protection of pasture animals from wolf attacks. On Monday, June 30, 2025, interested animal owners can receive helpful information and practical tips on the premises of the Demeter-Betrieb Riegenhof in Mainhardt from 9:30 a.m. to around 4:00 p.m. Entry is free and the event is an initiative of the Schwäbisch-Franconian Forest Nature Park, the company to protect the wolves and the company Patura, such as nabu wolves feed on over 95 % of wild animals and attack unprotected pasture. It is particularly important to use preventive herd protection measures in order to keep wolves from livestock cracks. Electrical fences represent one of the most effective protective measures.
The correct installation of this fences is crucial: they should at least 90 cm high, ideally 120 cm high, and reach to the floor, because wolves tend to dig up under fencing. Studies show that the first electricity -bearing strand should be stretched at a height of about 20 cm to deter the wolf. A targeted herd protection strategy requires advice from experienced herd protection consultants to find individual solutions that are effective and at the same time minimize the risks.
innovative protection against wolves
But not only fences can be good business. Herd protection dogs are also increasingly coming into play to guard herds. Races such as Pyrenäenberg dogs, Maremmanos or Kangals prove themselves. They grow up near the pasture animals and learn early to defend the herd against intruders. It is important that these dogs are looked after by experienced owners because they are territorial and can also become active in the event of an attack.
The state government supports animal owners in the purchase of herd protection measures, but the subsidies vary depending on the state. So far, there has been no uniform framework for the funding, crack assessment and damage compensation. Here, too, the NABU, as mentioned on its website, sets itself for a comprehensive support through political measures
For everyone who wants to deal more intensively with the topic of herd protection and the current wolf situation, the seminar in Mainhardt offers an excellent way to continue their education and successfully meet the challenges that the wolf entails.
